I can confirm this.
On the note of your lot being .. non-lone wolves.. I cannot seem to set your 'alliance' to peace. However, I believe that the following occurs.
1. Player A joins alliance A.
2. Player B opens Player A's stats page. Player A is still in alliance A, this can be seen on the stats page along with the options to declare war, neutral or peace with alliance A.
3. Player A leaves alliance A. Player B still has Player A's stats page open, still showing A in alliance A.
4. Player B sets peace to alliance A -or rather: uses the "set peace to alliance" button still showing on Player A's stats page. Player A however is as per 3. no longer in alliance A.
5. Player A sees the peace declaration, however, as their alliance is now "none", all Players associated with the similar alliance ID "none" receive the message.
The statistical probability of this event spontaneously (i.e. unintentionally) re-occurring if the abovementioned is the correct course of action is insignificant to none. Congratulations.
The facts presented by Reschef point in the direction of my earlier mentioned analysis being true.
