Andy Whitfield, the handsome Australian actor who starred in the first season of Starz's gladiator drama Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has died at age 39 from non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, the network confirms.
His wife, Vashti Whitfield, issued this statement:
"On a beautiful, sunny Sydney spring morning, surrounded by his family, in the arms of his loving wife, our beautiful young warrior Andy Whitfield lost his 18 month battle with lymphoma cancer. He passed peacefully surrounded by love. Thank you to all his fans whose love and support have help carry him to this point. He will be remembered as the inspiring, courageous and gentle man, father and husband he was."
A statement from Starz president Chris Albrecht:
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield. We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in 'Spartacus' and came to know that the man who played a champion on-screen was also a champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to all of us as he faced this very personal battle with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and fans."

It is a terrible thing to hear happen to somebody, let alone somebody who finally made his first big step into his acting career. It makes me very sad.

Re: Andy Whitfield
Technically speaking, it's a huge boost for his career. Think Heath Ledger. This kind of publicity makes sure you are remembered quite some time after your death.
Humanly speaking, I was deeply sorry to hear it. Loved the guy. Very amiable and cool in attitude and behaviour.. shame he was stolen so early.

Re: Andy Whitfield
not necessarily... Brandon Lee did not get all that big a boost to his career when he died.
"Great holy armies shall be gathered and trained to fight all who embrace evil. In the name of the gods, Browsers shall be changed to carry the internet out amongst the peoples and we will spread Firefox to all the unbelievers. The power of the Firefox will be felt far and wide and the wicked users of IE shall be converted to use the true browsers."

Forum roll back sucks, cant be bothered retyping all my replies lol
Sad for anyone to die this young, Im 35 ( almost his age ) and though that may seem old to you teens and 20somthings, no one expects fatal illness until way past retirement age, he was only 1/2 way there.
I always though Spartacus was a dumbed down version of Rome, it was no great work and Andy Whitfield was no great actor. Maybe he would have become a great actor given more time, but with his life and career cut short we will never know.
A horrible loss for his family, but for the rest of the world just 1 of 1000s taken before their time everyday.
