Re: Football, 1 name, two sports.

I understand that it's original name isn't soccer. I never stated it was. However I did state that Americans didn't call (American) Football "American Football" untill Soccer / Football fans started saying that Soccer / Kickball / Football was the real football.

I'm not quiet sure what your getting at with the last few sentences however saying that America wasn't original with the name of the sport makes no sense as American Football and Football / Soccer are unrelated and different in almost every way.

It would have had relevence if the games were related like Ping pong (Table Tenis) and Tenis. If one of those had the same name as another then it wouldn't be original. However with two unrelated different sports you can't call either unoriginal.

You both realize that you have deviated from the set debate style right? and that you will be marked down...or ignored....depending on my mood.

its ok profit. They have requested to be marked (there is no rate in the title) ergo you dont have to be conserned about it. WHAT we DO have to be conserned about is them straying from the conformed rules. Soon though im hoping bazzy will have given me a section for debates like this, that dont want to follow the rules.

Wrap it up lads.

Re: Football, 1 name, two sports.

just wondering... you guys do realize that there are also Rugby and AFL who call their codes football as well?

For those who follow Rugby (New zealanders follow that sport religiously) call Rugby, Football (i'm not 100% sure, but sure enough)

and The Australian Football League... for those who follow that it's also called Football...

Re: Football, 1 name, two sports.

ok what about Australian Football (AFL).. there is many types on football around the world but "Soccer" is the original. Im pritty sure that the USA is one of the only countries to still call it soccer... here is Australia it has officialy changed to Football.. and Australian Football is AFL.

also im pritty sure that rugby originated from soccer... at one point soccer was banned in england because it was too voilent.

thats all i got. wel i got more but cbf.

Re: Football, 1 name, two sports.

nope, in Australia it depends where you are, for example in Victoria, you would call AFL Football, in New South Wales you'd most likely call Rugby Football, it also depends which league you follow the most (A-League, AFL, or NFL...rugby)

and Rugby was the one that got banned lol, not soccer.

i was watching a documentary on T.V, and it was talking about the split from Rugby and Soccer, one group wanted to play a more violent game which became rugby, while the other group wanted to play a more tactical game (i guess) which became soccer

Re: Football, 1 name, two sports.

Becuase I am bored I have read this Topic.

You all have a point there, however in Australia Soccer is pressing hard to be known simply as 'football'.
This will probably never happen as there is 3 game codes that are simply called 'football'.

Arguably I do not blame soccer as the feet/foot makes the most contact with the ball.

AFL or known as 'football' also has another name. 'Aussie rules'.
That being simply because the game was created and developed in Australia.

Rugby is ruled out via the term 'Rugby', so that fails to gain the right to be known as 'football'.

American Football is know as 'Grid Iron' and really doesn't use much foot-to-ball skills there, so I reckon soccer has the right/privilage to be called/known as 'Football'.

My opinnion. :-D

Re: Football, 1 name, two sports.

yea Australian soccer is pressing hard to be known as Football

yea but when your talking to other people who follows that code, you still would refer to the sport as Football, and not Aussie rules or Grid Iron, its just too weird >.<

I rekon, you call football the code that you follow, it has always been that way, and it will always be that way

Agreed.

However, as an official name, soccer wins :P

Re: Football, 1 name, two sports.

gaelic isnt really older. if you were to go back far enough to see which were older, the sport would no longer conform to modern ideas of the rules. no sport is really older than another when a simple ball is involved as ball games are evident in pretty much all cultures throughout history.

football has the greater right to be called what it is as the ball intended to be kicked. thats fact. doesnt mean american football cant be called football though. its context dependant. in the usa its football, everywhere else its american football. its the same with soccer being called such in the usa and football everywhere else.

while american rugby would be more approprite, its not revelent. everyone knows what american football is and changeing it would cause much hassle. yes, although more accurate it doesnt matter. its a name. what it means to the individual is important. btw ping pong is called table tennis as its played on a table. american football is called what it is as its predominately played in the us.

i do believe football in the uk was originally called soccer, derived from 'association football'. but in this day telling a non american football is soccer is an insult lol.

in short both names are adequate in their own areas of influence. jus another thing to add to the list of what americans have messed with (the spelling of centre for example). each country can do what it wants, jus as long as its not forced upon others.

man i hate when uk residents call football soccer :(
