Re: Ireland, Cork. Jan 31st and Feb 1st

Ok ok you all, you convinced me through the presence of Hansbrough that I should be there... I will arrive on Cork airport on Jan 31st around 10.15 and I shall try to leave from the same airport Feb 1st around 17.00. Whatever happens in between happens, I am sure it'll all be a good time :) So for who-ever decides to come, till then!

Re: Ireland, Cork. Jan 31st and Feb 1st

I move away from Cork and theres an SGW meet..............just my luck......

Avoid crossing the river to the northside of the city, best to stick to southside and to the city centre. :-D
Theres nothing to see but the worst part of the city and usually the most dangerous late at night.

If you are of a mind to play pool/snooker/darts/bowling while drinking away a night then the Mardyke on Sheares Street is the place you want to go. Sometimes stuff will need to be booked in advance though like the bowling. Trying to remember prices for ye.....bowling is around 36 euro per hour, snooker and pool are 12 per hour too. Heard the darts was about that much too. Old Oak is good when there's a gig on, check online for stuff. Theres more pubs than shops in cork so you will be spoilt for choice. You could always try the Barrack Street Challange while you are there. There are varying rules but the main ones are
-1 pint per pub once pint is finished you move swiftly along to next pub.
-No going to the toilet.
-Don't expect to complete it. I've never heard of it being done. last I heard there were 12 pubs on barrack street.
-Don;t expect to remember it.

Places to go( for those who will want to explore Cork before leaving)
Blarney Castle, it's worth a look though Blarney will dent your pocket for gifts.
St. Finbarre's Cathedral, just over the river on the south west side of the city, take the first left off washington street, cross the bridge and turn right( you cant miss it once you get beyond the brewery)
The university is worth a look as well.
Kinsale in my opinion is overrated and overpriced so don't bother with it at all.

Depending on my own financial situation I may or may not make an appearance, looking doubtful though.

Re: Ireland, Cork. Jan 31st and Feb 1st

Wow, I only have room from Chris and Brian lol in my place, and it , but tis all cool EVERYONE is more then welcome to come and stay, just ye will have to shack up with eachother...

Anyway, yes Chris and Brian are staying at my place, we will do all the touristy stuff when they arrive, if people are gonna be there for the 31st, I can meet them in the airport there and then just contact me and let me know what times your landing etc... There is a bus into town anyway..

As for going out, not going to any northside pub, (over the river) or Reardens, it's too packed everynight and for 10 to get in on a Friday not a hope.. More then likely it will be

Sober Lane,
Old Oak,
The Brog (maybe),
Scotts,
Mardyke,
Crane Lane,
my place

or

all of the above..

As for hotels and or cheap B&B's I reccomend Windsor Inn on McCurtin Street.

Cork Places to stay

I reccomend there because it's cheap and central to everything.. As well as three of you can share a room, (if two of you don't mind shacking up together) without paying the per person rate.

As for the plan

Wednesday Brian and Chris arrive, pick them up at 12.25 go into Town and get food, do a quick tour and go out to the University for a looksie.. (weather pending)

Thursday - Blarney, you can't come to Cork and not go to Blarney.. Kiss the stone visit the gardens. Do the touristy thing.. Don't eat in Blarney cos well 30.00 for something that should cost 10, not a hope.

Friday - Midleton and or Cobh, Time pending... Midleton there is the Jameson Whiskey Distillary, at the end you get a free Whiskey... Cobh, the Titantic Mueseum.. The last place Titantic saw land, they also have some of the items recovered from the ship. This will be time pending, one of both can be done..

Friday Night - Drinking and lots of it.. Again going to do the tour, but will definately go to Sober Lane for the pizzas.. Best pizzas on the planet and I dare anybody to disagree!!! As well as drinking there is nothing like beer and pizza...

Saturday - Depends on what has been done, there is the option of Karting, but thats expensive 55 for a grand prix, or 40 for 30 mins.. There is also shopping..

More then likely tho we will have a gaming day in Area 51, its €5 for 5 hours.. So possibly Call of Duty 4... :P http://area51.ie/ is the website for them. They will also order pizza for us.

Saturday Night - More drinking.. I mean you wont even know what your drinking drinking...

Sunday, the go home event... You will be escorted to the airport to go back to your respective lives.. :)

As for the local customs..

- There is no smoking in any bar, resturant, taxi, shop etc.. Doing such a thing can get you evicted, and a fine of €1,500 as well as being arrested by the Gardai (Police). Also customs check everything for drugs, 3 people arrested in Cork Airport this morning for it.. They won't leave you in..

- Your in Cork City, central of all things Cork, might be a good idea to skim http://www.corkslang.com/ so you can understand the locals

- Going out - Casual wear is accepted, jeans and a shirt, most bars will not leave you in if your wearing sports tops, or any sort of white trainers or white on them.. Best to have brown or black shoes or completely brown or black trainers, and a shirt.. Don't tempt your luck as it won't happen.. Also MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ID, most places are 21's or over.. And if the bar shuts at 12.30, you have to be gone at 12.30, there have been instances where pints have been taken off you.

- MOST IMPORTANT It will most likely be raining, so my best advise is to bring a rain jacket with you at all times (It's lashing rain right now). And an umbrella. There is no avoiding it, as it can not be beaten. It's like trying to mass Jason (admin) and walking away unscathed.

As for the internet, I have wireless in my apartment, so if anyone wants to bring a laptop your more then welcome to, I also have a camera, but I don't have a large TV, or any games console.. :( So apologies..

Look forward to meeting anybody, everybody..

Jamie

P.S. yoyo_sgw I'm from Waterford too :P 8)

P.P.S. Nomadic, you can say at my place if you want to, room there, (er i think) ..... Won't be doing the barrack street challenge, I don't want to be responsible for killing people..

P.P.P.S. I am assuming everyone coming will be an adult. So I won't be responsible if you start a fight or get beaten up.. Cork people can be err agressive.. But I usually avoid all that... You should be grand..
Back in my day, we massed you for disrespect!
