Not sure if this topic / question has ever been posed...if so I welcome mods to delete it

I Heard a song today by a band that never gained the fame and status in the ethos of music history they should have. It prompted me to post the question to you ...

What is the band / performer that you feel never got the fame or credit they could or should have ?

I do not mean one hit wonders, I mean truly great acts that in their way changed music, influenced others, and left a legacy that on hindsight showed greatness. Please do not name bands that are just a few years old- I am asking about the forgotten ones, not the potential ones.

I have two in mind, but I will wait to see if anyone else agrees before I toss in my opinion.

The Kinks for me never have had the recognition of other bands in their time, the shadow cast by the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys was rather large but they still released songs such as
- You really got me
- All day, and all night
- Lola

Most people know these songs but most people don't know The Kinks which for me is one of those over looked bands

This is a hard question to answer. Not only does everyone's definition of "under-rated" differ, but some bands are big in some countries and not in others.

For example, Lostprophets to me are underrated. No one really knows about them in the US, but they may be huge overses.


Ok, didn't see the qualification but still feel my post adds to the thread. If it doesn't I'll delete it.

lost prophets are badly overrated.

Personally, i feel there is a lot of underrated metal bands, that are gone, and put into the shadows by bands like metallica, linkin park and slipknot.

Linkin Park is badly overrated. Dream Theater's underrated.

However, There are groups in all genres that are underrated, ones that stand out for me are Chiddy bang. Great hip hop group that bring it back to its roots. Some nice and inventive music videos too.

Far too many talented and innovative people out there that dont get any mention in any way.
Most people dont know what good music is anyway so there is just so much stuff.
Also just because a band isnt multi platinum selling doesnt mean its under-rated. Depends who rates them doesnt it
As this thread suggests...E.G. the kinks are overrated not underrated

SEVENDUST is the most underrated band in the world, (outside of US imho) and i mean from Alt. Metal

The Kinks contribution to music is far greater than of The Beatles. Sadly popularity is not strongly correlated with quality.


Don't get me wrong - I like The Beatles, yet I do adore The Kinks.

Disturbed is one of the most underrated.

Destorm is another one.
