Untrained Mercenaries

It's been well over a decade and I'm still unsure what purpose untrained mercs have. They literally do nothing (or do they!?
).
Are they a long standing joke?
Can we make a feature out of them?

They were put in place to bump ascended points, they are worth HALF of what a regular Merc is worth
It is also a place to store naq that can never be taken
Just wiped clean in an ascension if you forget about the 54b you had.

Interesting.
Presumably they don't contribute much towards ascension these days then?
