Is it just me or has the overall illiteracy of the human species hit a horrible low?
As I search sites like Craigslist EBay and others... I have noticed the majority of posts cannot comprehend basic English.
Hell just take a look around this forum and you'll see it.
So here is my question.
Is it poor spelling, grammer, and basic intelligence or are people just too hurried to try hard?
I for one die a little when I see just blatant disregard for simple pronunciation.

People are just lazy. And since most people understand even half-written sentences, apparently they can afford to be lazy.

Well when grammer was underlined with a red dotted line you were thinking "Oh screw that red dotted line, he doesn't control me.". So be sure to add inferiority complex to the list of lazy, illiterate, etc.

tlkin to scum lyke u, I dun need to try hard.
Personally, I rarely see anything that goes outside the "general mistake, not great at spelling" boundary. I'm pretty terrible at spelling and grammar but I'm far from illiterate.
Are you more pedantic than me or do you just see the worst of it by visiting American sites?

Re: Generalized Illiteracy
It's not limited to English speaking people, I can confirm that...
I cannot stand that, but people don't give a damn anymore about writing correctly.
"The worst you are the cooler you are", Nelson Muntz theory...that's why people try to be "cool and swag" by writing utter nonsense.

Re: Generalized Illiteracy
Well, as a teenager, I can tell you that the problem doesn't solely come from texting. It does seem to come from laziness, though. Often, I see an attitude that says,"I talk this way to my friends, but I can talk professionally when I have to". It becomes a habit to talk that way, and before they know it, people don't remember proper English.

Welcome to the United States, where people are more concerned with passing fads than education.
For those who will criticize, I do not speak of higher levels of education but your school systems below University.

Re: Generalized Illiteracy
As much as I hate it, some part of me views it as an evolution of the english language. In practise our usual letters and required expressions are colourful, but actually unnecessary, ergo to make language more efficient we are cutting out unnecessary letters in general use and practise. This is more than just the laziness of the bastardised form a large majority of the uninitiated call 'American English', rather an entire overhaul, built up around singular symbols (emotes such as ) and shortened phrases; you, u, like, lyk, hate, h8.
If an apocalypse comes I can realistically see a world based on a language of that nature, text speak I believe it is called.

The difference between these countries though is not all of them have the funding that the United States does to pump into schools. I am not saying Canada is exempt, or any other country - the stupid just seems to flourish more in the United States than anywhere else.
From my experience anyways.
The United States refuses to, where as a country like South America does not have the money to spend as they have other problems like..poverty.

Re: Generalized Illiteracy
I can and do swap back and forth between typing like a complete idiot, to typing with at least acceptable grammar and punctuation. Honestly, it really depends who I'm talking to, I almost always adjust my writing according to who I'm talking to.
I think a good majority of the "Lazy texters" are capable of both. That and there will always be people who for whatever have issues with spelling and grammar despite best efforts. It may seem simple to you, but other people just can't seem to grasp it. Hell, I went to school with a kid who had a 4.0 GPA and couldn't spell for to save his life. His spell checker was his best friend.
