Why does the sex age have to be so high (don't give me the "because people live longer now" crap, nature makes kids get horny when puberty hits, and that won't change no matter what laws you have)?

Why does sexuality have to be seen as so negative in so many places (I know, mainly religious influence, but there are even atheist prudes out there. So I wanna know why)?

Why is morality needed at all (There are idiots out there, but we could just ignore them...which, is better then hating or hurting them in my opinion, cuz that only drags you down to their level...)?

Why do people have to slap dogma's of good, bad, evil or holy to sex (in my opinion, sex is none of these. It just IS, and feels rather good. :-D )?

And so on... Yes, I have a problem with how the masses (especially the religiously influenced ones) treat sex. :P

The Existence Central Bank

I'm not going to go into the debate, but it took over the Memorial Day thread and kind of pissed me off. Maybe they can rail at each other somewhere besides a thread dedicated to the fallen.

if anyone is actually interested in that topic, I strongly reccommend that you watch a film called Zeitgeist. I dont think you'll find it in the shops but its easily available via youtube etc.

Re: Debate Ideas

Do not get me flipping going on Lisbon! I have had to talk about it so much and I'm still none the wiser. I professing a no vote for ages, but now I'm swinging to Yes. I have a few good reasons but I dont want to get into them unless people really want it.

Re: Debate Ideas

The Yes campaign cant really be properly summerised like the No one can. Its about making the EU more efficient.

Yes, Ireland is giving up some of its veto rights but don't forget everyone else is too. If you have 27 countries how many things will they agree on unanimously? Not many I bet. If you want the EU to ever get anything done and not get bogged down in petty bureaucracy and stubbornness be my guest. All in all, Lisbon is changing just over 30 voting areas from unanimous to QMV. Ireland has taken up its right to opt out of QMV in the sensitive taxation issue and thus your worries about corporation tax are unfounded. Direct taxes such as income and corporation taxes are safe. (On a sidenote indirect taxes may be affected, which may affect Irelands traditional low direct tax, high indirect tax regime. One tax which could be affected might be VRT for example, even thought Irelands already been told to get rid of it Rolling Eyes) Heres a post summarising why corp tax will be unaffected http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost ... ostcount=2

The Self-Amending Treaty basically means that the EU can change how it works without drawing up a new Treaty every single time. It just means the Treaty's can become more like our constitution which can amended piece by piece instead of needing to create a long, expensive treaty every time you want to change something. However, nothing can be added without a treaty and anything which affects sensitive issues(like defense and foreign affairs) or our constitution without a referendum. And we still retain our veto on issues such as taxation.

Also the No sides claims that we are losing all our voting power is wrong. In actual fact our voting power is staying pretty much the same. The 0.8% figure of the No camp is derived from the fact that one criteria which voting power will be derived from is poplulation. They conveniently forget about the other criteria which requires 55% of states to agree for it to pass which gives us a 3.75% influence(We currently have a 2% influence BTW). According to some in-depth calculations Ive seen we would have 6% reduction in blocking power, a 6% increase in passing legislation power and will have the decisive vote 36% less of the time. All in all , we will about as influential as before. And anyone who mentions the loss of an MEP may want to take into consideration that the size of the parliament is being reduced and its not that the big countries are stealing our seats.(you'll need four countries and a certain % of population to block legislation )

Most of the No posters I have seen have been anti abortion, anti fox hunting, protecting Ireland neutrality. The neutrality issue is not a problem as we have a opt-out clause there. The other issues are just BS with people piggybacking other problems on to Lisbon.

this is a very good booklet that was supposed to be sent to every household. I havent gotten it yet, but here is the pdf http://www.lisbontreaty2008.ie/Lisbon_T ... nglish.pdf

Re: Debate Ideas

the goal is to create one, huge, supranational state called at the moment "eu". big money pit full of red tape that ppl like us wont be able to control. all national states will cease to exist as such, they will be reorganised in bunch of eu provinces.

lisbon treaty is another step in this direction

more: to achieve this end all dirty tricks are allowed. in the past eu propagators used deception, confusion and lies many times. i'm not a historian so more information with sources in this book (ya don't have to buy it. should be in libraries. in dublin it's in ilac)

Quick!!! Get the tin-foil hats before it's too late!!!! We're DOOOOOMMMED, DOOMED I SAY!!!!!!!!!

Come on now. I saw Zeitgeist too. Some of it is interesting and true but a lot of it is speculation and BS. Do you actually think that stubborn nationalistic countries like Italy and France (France who rejected all other EU treaties in referendums but doesnt get one on lisbon and so it was passed) are going to allow them selves to be turned in the The United States Of Europe or some such??? Come on now. Britain wouldnt even join the Euro zone.

The last time people tried to unite Europe it failed miserably (see Romans, Mongols, Napoleon)

Re: Debate Ideas

Ooooooh, a chance to play devils advocate! :-D

Putting aside reality of the matter of how the EU is an economic integration and how this treaty and others are to streamline the buerocracy in the wake of the latest expansion + harmonization of legislature to ease life on the common good services & labour market...

Fiction:
What if EU pursued a path of confederalizadion or even federalization? (Extreme examples). What would be the big disaster in everyday life? You can`t really compare EU to other agressive attempts of "unification" when this is done on the bassis of mutual consent and will to peacefull coexistance... Fact of the matter is that for arguably the first time in history Europeans are managing without killing eachother heh. What is the downside of a EU with "more substance"?
The fact it`ll be able to parry the existing and emerging superpowers and present with authority it now lacks a more "seasoned" view/option deriving from the fact it is the living proof ppl can live together instead of killing eachother? The fact nations possibly wont have their standing armies but one multinational one? The fact that a couple generations from now a German will be looking at an Englishman the same way the Englisman now looks at a Scott and vice versa? (ok poor example, think loyalists heh)
And just what measure of control should we fear loosing, compared to the control we have now over governments, if EU parliament is to be granted comparable authority? It`s just as democraticaly voted in. What is there to fear then, democracy cannot function with 400mil people? They manage in US (sorta heh).
What is there to really fear? Ze Germans? NWO? Loosing of our cultural identity? That`s kinda pasee and over the top, isn`t it lol?

And for the "socialist" connotation. Excuse me? The "Red threath"? Surely thou jests. The social (doesn not equal "commie") connotations of european model capitalism (in some countries more than others) make the European continent the one with the by far gratest "quality of life". Where is there a problem with that? This "socialistic" model will outlive the neoconservatism&liberalism in many oppinions.
