I saw something about a vacation mode. what exactly is that and how is it activated?

There's a link in the lower right of your command center that mentions, among others, vacation mode. Click it and the following will come up.
I believe the rest is pretty much self-explanatory.
Go On Vacation!
2 Earth Days Minimum - time will stop in your realm. No unit or other generation, no attacks on you, NOTHING... time stops for you. Be aware, others will certainly pass you by...

If it moves, kill it. If it doesn't move, kick it until it does move, and then kill it.
