Re: Top 10 Greatest Films of all time...

Tough one, far to many great films to pick just ten, some were great in there day, or because you were young when they came out, some were great one-time watches that you cant watch again after you know the twists and some are good to watch over and over, how to pick

I'll give my opinions on the options you gave to vote on

Star Wars - Star Wars has to be the film I have watched the most times, growing up in the 80's my family got it's first Video Recorder when I was about 7 or 8 years old and that was the first film I owned ( recorded off TV ), sadly I cant watch it now as at the grand old age of 32 with so many other films since it has far less impact, I think the childhood memories of the film are better than the film itself, also I know every line in the script and have a bad habit of speaking them out loud over the movie :D

Lord of The Rings - Return of the King - Some great battle scenes but the rest of the movie is crap, when you keep checking your watch in the cinema waiting for it to end and your arse has gone numb from sitting still so long, thats a bad sign.

Matrix (1999) - Excelent, ground breaking, love it, "there is no spoon" :D

Shawshank Redemption - Cant be that good, I know I've seen it and cant remember anything worthy of comment

The Godfather (part I & II jointly) - To be watched every other year, classics, if you like these also try 'Once upon a time in America' :D

To Kill a Mocking Bird - Classic for some, not my taste

Gladiator - American versions of history are always amusing, nothing more though. "Are you not entertained?" Not so much lol

Gone With the Wind - Shudders, cant even watch it.

Pulp Fiction - Brilliant, Travolta, Jackson, Willis, great one-liners, great story, love the soundtrack too

The Dark Knight - What rubbish, guess the young and dumb like that kind of thing.

Apocalypse Now - Class movie, dark and gritty, The Doors - The End song really sums it up

It's a Wonderful Life - Never seen it or had any urge to do so

JAWS - Love it, makes you jump out your seat the first time

E.T. - Never watched all the way through because it just to boring

The Great Escape - Over rated, nothing special

if that were really the case you wouldn't have limited your films to those that have come out of hollywood it is either showing your limited tastes or it's an increadable insult to film makers from anywhere but the US saying that they do not make masterpieces

Well said, have to add that the pay packets of Hollywood actors makes me sick, no-one is worth what they get paid, and the huge promotion budgets and virtual monopolies on distribution and cinema chains makes very good low budget independent movies very hard to find.

Re: Top 10 Greatest Films of all time...

not only that but the constant remakes of films from non-english speaking countrys just a year or two after they are made with rubish results the only good one i've seen is the departed (which was great) but even that wasn't as good as the original. valkyre may prove alright as well but seeing as the orignal is less that 5 years old is unneed if cinemas would just put non-english films on ocasinally
Flow with it

Re: Top 10 Greatest Films of all time...

Best non-english flims I have on DVD ( I only speak English & a little Welsh )

District 13 - French ( Available dubbed or subtitled to English )

Delicatessen - French ( Sick lol )

Battle Royal - Japanese ( Japanese films rock, they're a nation of nutters )

Battle Royal Requiem - Japanese

The Boat - German ( Best submarine war film ever )

Run Lola Run - German

Wish I had more, but know what to buy / download is tricky so if anyone wants to recommend some I'd welcome it.

Also on the subject of remakes, whats with all the classics being remade in recent years and why do it when the originals are so much better, I'm thinking of The Ladykillers, The Italian Job, Oceans11, I am Legend ( aka The Omega Man ), and many more, if you cant improve on the original, leave it alone :D

Re: Top 10 Greatest Films of all time...

city of God is a non-english film and is very good. definitely worth a watch, especially as the subtitles quickly become natural. bad dubbing should be punishable by death. i choose subtitles every time over dubbing, unless they do a quality job (rarely)

but overall id say english language films are the best for many reasons (funding, actors, wide range of genres etc)

i definatley agree on the dubbing, it should be outlawed

but can't agree on the actors and wide range of genres there are just as many great actors in other countrys and as for genres while you may only be able to easily find action and horror asian films in western countrys they have just as many genres as hollywood mabye even more as they have films like cashern which are impossible to classify into a hollywood genre.

and i don't think i've ever seen a hollywood absurdist film :-)

Re: Top 10 Greatest Films of all time...

I would say Metropolis and 1933 King Kong are missing. And Terminator 2. Any of those three I consider MUCH MUCH better than let's say...Pulp Fiction, just average B-Movie gangster stuff, which is mediocre compared to both 1932 & 1983 versions of Scar Face. (even though I prefer original to remake, I must admit even the remake is a gangster movie masterpiece, even subjectively I couldn't understand how Pulp Fiction could be placed instead of any of the two)

While we are at it, The Green Mile also would deserve to be on that list...I also see Raiders of the Lost Arch is mentioned in the "why is it not here?", and I agree completely.

Matrix is amazing, but I wouldn't put it instead of Raiders of the Lost Arch or The Green Mile. I would mercilessly put it aside to put one of these two in. :P

*Lord of The Rings - Return of the King (top 10 material - seen it)
Matrix (1999) (liked it a lot, but not fitting for an overall top 10 in my opinion, for a sci-fi top 10, it would)
*Shawshank Redemption (top 10 material - seen it)
*The Godfather (part I & II jointly) (top 10 material - seen it)
To Kill a Mocking Bird. (I have not seen it entirely, I am not sure whether it can fit within a top 10)
*Star Wars (1977) (top 10 material - seen it now idea how many times lol)
*Gladiator (top 10 material - seen it)
Gone With the Wind (I have not seen it, thus cannot tell)
Pulp Fiction (as I said, definitely not top 10 material in my opinion, should be booted for Scar Face original -or remake some would say-)
¤The Dark Knight (difficult to say, it's recent masterpiece but I am unsure)
Apocalypse Now (I have not seen it, thus cannot tell)
It's a Wonderful Life (I have not seen it, thus cannot tell)
¤JAWS (difficult to say if it's top 10 material)
E.T. (I have watched it a while ago, I don't remember sadly sufficiently to give a proper opinion)
The Great Escape (I have not seen it, thus cannot tell)

I would add to my top 10 objective (given I have not yet seen some in your list)
Scar Face 1932
King Kong 1933
Metropolis
Terminator 2 or The Green Mile
Raiders of the Lost Arch

Also would say some Eastwood movie would fit here (The Good, The Bad & The Ugly perhaps?)

Re: Top 10 Greatest Films of all time...

There can never be a "top 10 greatest films" because people have their own tastes in movies, etc.

The only thing you could probably do is take the majority rules opinion. Either way, I voted. :D

Back on the subject of non-english films

3 more to add to the list which are so brilliant they are worth tolerating dubbing or even subtitles

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl who played with fire
The Girl who kicked the hornets nest

Watch the Swedish versions..... do NOT watch the Hollywood BS remakes

No love for Goodfellas? Or Glory for that matter? For those that may not have seen it, excellent movie about an all black regiment during the American civil war.

I am also a fan of Rudy.
Not one of the greatest in terms of Academy likes, but its close to being one of the best Man movies of all time imho.

Another underrated classic is The Warriors. Made with a fraction of the budget of the above mentioned, but stands the test of time.

Der Untergang (Downfall) is a German film about the last 10 days of Hitler's life as the Red Army sacks Berlin. Told from the POV of his secretary Traudl Junge. Very solid watch for anyone interested in that time period.

A Japanese film Otoko Tachi no Yamato is worth checking out as well. Its about the crew of the Yamato with the climax at Operation Ten-Go (invasion of Okinawa).

Pretty good mentions from all the above. Glad to see such a varied taste in cinema.

Glory is indeed a great movie about subjects such as Secession War and also the relations between former slaves-now citizens/soldiers and the white Americans from both sides of the war.

we'd think that about eight or so on any list of ten we'd write up would be movies we recently watched. There's too many great movies out there... and too few...
