The easiest/fairest way to speed up ascentions again without taking away from what people have already done is to allow multiple ascentions at a time.
Example:
Player X is an AG and wants to ascend. He has 3500 G&R, 300,000 Raw UP, 200m UU, 20m trained troops, and 30t naq.
Player X is given the option of ascending once with the excess being converted into ascension points(or whatever it is) OR ascending multiple times until he no longer has enough resources to meet the minimums.
So Player X chooses the second option; He pays the 1,000 G&R, 80,000 Raw UP, 6m UU, 4.8m trained troops, and 120b naq for EAG. He pays the 1,000 G&R, 90,000 Raw UP, 8.5m UU, 5.8m trained troops, and 150b naq for AGoL. He pays the 1,000 G&R, 100,000 Raw UP, 10m UU, 7m trained troops, and 175b naq for IAG. Since he doesn't meet the minimums for the next ascension all the excess resources are converted into ascension points.
While Player X ascended from AG to IAG all at once he paid a premium to do so. The cost in raw UP was more expensive because instead of building from 0-80k/0-90k/0-100k he built 0-80k/80k-170k/170k-270k. Also he had to maintain the necessary stats for 3x as long as needed for only 1 ascension.
While this doesn't really help those in the later ascensions it does enable those in the early ones to quickly move through the cheap ascensions and could help cut 2-3 months off the total ascension time for new members. It also eases the pain of the first big ascension for some who've stopped somewhere between prior and UK and want to ascend again but not wasted the building up they've already done.
Ive got to say..ive read alot of ideas about this and thought they were all stupid..but yours...it actually makes sense and i can see it being reasonable, maybe admin can add 5% more to the cost of ascending if they do multiple ones in a row? I dont know..just throwing out an idea to make it more realistic to those who will gripe and complain about it being unfair about being able to ascend multiple times. So perhaps if they can ascend multiple times at once raise the ascention cost per ascention after the first by a set % to help balance it a little bit.
