Want to hear about an old system? How about mine. 10 GB's is literally ALL of my available hard drive space. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. rocks. Brilliant concept, beautiful graphics, awesome creatures and weapons.
So Buck, I would build a system that could run Stalker as efficiently and quickly as possible.
The maps are massive and a lot of players can fit on them in multiplayer. So if you can build something that will make the multiplayer shine, you will be set.
Laptops:
I had found a laptop a few years ago. It had a problem with the fan or the power supply. It couldn't be fixed because the damaged product was built into the motherboard itself. I can't remember what the damaged piece was. I just knew that I might as well have bought a new laptop instead of fixing it. My friend owned a computer shop and said that it was junked.
I don't know much about laptops, but they seem very un-economic when it comes to repair. What if the screen is damaged, the keyboard?

laptops are good..ive had a nice supply of both laptops and desktops over the years and the former have always done me proud, very easily personalised, portable, as good as a desk top most of the time.
As for repair, my old laptop broke on me after two years (much to my utter horror..some good memories with that beasty..also the birth place of my book) the keyboards and motherboards etc are quite easily repaired if you have a fair cover in place. Just got to look after it, and with all things make sure you got insurance. Then if its not reparable you get a new one. SO good times.

Good idea.
If you want a laptop buck, get maximum insurance.
Laptops are definentely better for musicians who jam or play live stuff.
I forgot about this:
If you want to go to Lan parties, its probably more feasable to have a Laptop.

Like with most things there is pros and cons.
Laptops do make things a bit easier sometimes as you can easily take it with you where ever you go. And if you do purchase one I would spend as much as possible and insure it for as long as possible. Both Desktop and Laptops have propriotary parts (only true for desktops that are brand names, such as Alienware, Sony, Dell, HP, Compaq, ect.) and thus make it difficult for one to replace when damaged. Many times the part needed is expensive, or in some occassion out of stock and isn't being made anymore. Another note, is laptops only are capable of getting upgraded to a certain point and then are no more. I personally have always spent my good hard earnd dollar on Desktop. The ability to custom build and easily swap parts out when broken or out dated. Where with propriortary machines you will have to more likely get your parts through them directly, custom building a machine can give you more options and far less compadability issues. The other downside to purchasing a laptop is it price will be more then a desktop of equal performace. You will have more money available to make you desktop more powerful then what you could afford when making the purchase of a laptop. So its all based on what you are looking for, and how big your pocket is.

firstly who would actually go to a LAN party? I mean I've never been at the point where id willingly sacrifice any form of normaly human bonding for a game and commit complete social suicide...but at least I'd now know how...
secondly, Buck and myself are at uni. I cant begin to explain to you the advantages of being able to have ur work sitting on your lap on that long train journey (or short one) or in a car journey. Not to mention the use of laptops for traveling entertainment.
In the end though im a financially comfortable bugger and have a good desktop and laptop so....each to their own..

No doubt, don't you love how you get the popup that says "Windows needs your permission to continue." Like you didn't realize you was making it do something you wanted...

haha i dualboot XP and Vista Ultimate... i have no speed problems, even with only 1 gig of ram. tho my CPU though pre C2D isnt half bad... Pentium D 950 @ 3.40Ghz
and the little alert thing, meh so what? it doesnt effect me much at all.
i just like vista, ive never had a problem with it, so far more useable for surfing and office stuff than XP... in my experience anyway.

it slows down, because naturally with business stuff...it dont like non-microsoft things. Ive found Vista has some sort of personal Vendetta against Itunes. It definately does not like fire fox or photoshop, and its not to fond of lime wire, but they seem to get a long well enough.
