You can see quickly whether they are online or not and can add them to your new PMs very easily..
Otherwise, I know not of any uses for it.

I have a feeling that given the chance, most people who voted for the RL violence thing woulnd't do it anyway.

Not everyone who leaves the game remains on the forum just to be a pain in the neck. Besides, I don't see how banning non-game forum accounts would be policeable.
