Re: Remembering the ANZACs
In the warfields of Flanders, the Somme and of France
The poppies are blooming, they sway and they dance
Ten thousand Australians, all tanned and all fit
Have come to this Country, the Jerries to hit.
The guns were all thundering, sombre and dull
The infantry streaming, then so mournful a lull
Our brave boys are falling - courageous and strong
Hark! Something has happened, something is wrong!
The Light Horse are stumbling, shaken and falling
They rally their mates on, true to their calling
The battle swords clatter, the foes are retreating
The Aussies press onwards, their mission completing.
******************************
I have spent the day in town at the RSL talking to some diggers and let me just say, there are some amazing stories out there. Our brave ex-serviceman/woman have done us a great sacrifice.

you really are lower than a snakes belly you know.
Oh really? How so?
You know there are hundreds of countries on this planet and each one of them has their very own history and war heroes and memorial days and whatnot. That's cool and should certainly be honoured but at the end of the day it has absolutely nothing to do with the game StarGateWars itself and therefore should not be in a forum with the description "ingame discussion".
However, I might be wrong... since the current forum administration happens to be Australian too, I bet this topic will be regarded a lot more important than a topic about... ummm let's say Sinai's Liberation Day, April 25th, celebrating the recall of the Israeli troops in 1985...
After all we do have a forum section for all the non game related topics and it is called "This and That".
and yet did anyone make a topic about that? not that i can see.
We will repeat our mistakes unless we remember them... and for some of us that actually MEANS something. apparently you are not one of them.

Re: Remembering the ANZACs
ANZAC Day means different things to different people, For Australia and New Zealand it is a day to reflect on all those brave soldiers who have fought for not only our freedom but the freedom of Europe, North Africa, Middle East, Korea, Vietnam, Borneo, Malaya, Singapore, South East Asia, America. The ANZACs fought so that the people in these countries and many others may sleep peacefully at night, many thousands of ANZACs made the ultimate sacrifice for these people, but most importantly for the bloke standing beside him. An identity of a nation was born on April 25th 1915, a nation who would fight to defend all people who wish to be free, and an unmatchable spirit of mateship where anyone of them would give their life so that their mate beside them could go on.
ANZACs have fought in every major conflict since the Boer War, And with these wars we are generally in it from the very beginning, Aussie pilots were in the first wave of planes to hit German targets in WW2, Aussie Fighter Jets conducted the first air strikes in Iraq while it was the Aussie SAS who crossed the border first.
We have an uncanny ability to "punch above our weight" In Korea we stopped the Chinese, In New Guinea we were the first to not only stop the Japanese but push them back, In Villers Bretonneux in France we pushed back the Germans, In Tobruk we held off the Germans for months with little air or armour support. In Vietnam Battle of Long Tan, outnumbered 10 to 1 the ANZACs defended themselves.
So on ANZAC day each and every year i ask that everyone (not just Aussies and Kiwis) take a minute to remember how the world is better because these brave men gave their lives so that you may all live free.
The majority of those who died are buried in cemeteries throughout the world in 23,000 sites in 146 countries, 102,807 ANZACs have given their lives to date.
These ANZACs are not only Heroes of their time but Heroes for all eternity, and May they or their deeds never be forgotten
Lest We Forget

I think it needs to be also noted that back when ANZACs started going to war, Australia's population was quite small, and even though the death of many thousands of their men left many women widowed or childless, that never stopped the onward march to fight for what was right and just.
We have come to the aid of much larger countries, and at great cost to our country. Many people don't view Australia as much other than a large island floating in the south pacific, but when it came to crunch time, Australia was never too scared to put their hands up and fight.
Thank you for that Josh, great words indeed.
It's not a matter of luck; it's just a matter of time.

Re: Remembering the ANZACs
I believe any celebration of what allied troops fought for during the second world war should be respected. People seem to forget that if Hitler had won, if u are gay, not white, Jew etc you would probably be dead or living in a ghetto working as slave labour. It's not too hard to imagine concentration camps/factories across the world producing goods for the free, and I bet you their conditions would be harsh.
As for the First World War, it was simply a war that should not have happened. A result of too many pacts and alliances. I should know, it affected my family greatly.
So while people may argue about the justice of other wars, no sane person should ever argue whether the 2nd World War should have been fought. Our generation and especially the teens of today take such things for granted. The buggers should all be conscripted and sent off to labor camps to build something useful instead of yobbing around.

Very true.
Every freedom we have today is mostly taken for granted due to the fact that we have never known anything else.
There are some places in our world that are still plagued with internal warring and injustice, just look at Tibet and several of the African nations that are on the "Do not travel" list on the Australian Government website.
It's just unfortunate that these people don't have us all fighting for them when they need us. I wish I knew the answer to that question.
It's not a matter of luck; it's just a matter of time.

Re: Remembering the ANZACs
Firstly.
Lest We Forget, though to be honest i agree it should probably be in this&that etc. Good on the aussies/kiwi's for working hard and sacrificing much despite their relative isolation and the little threat many of the wars they fought in had for Australia/New Zealand.
And by that i mean even though they sacrificed it all in WW1 they did it because it was right, not because there was some imminent threat against Australia/New Zealand
Stupidest thing i've heard in a while. Clearly you've never visited Tibet.
