Well first you have to define profitable a bit better...
Player B may not care about their supers, they may be about to go raiding and wish to get rid of their supers.
Player B may be in need of naq asap and so goes for lower naq hits than they usually would.
Player B may just be trying to annoy people (and it worked) so that makes up for the apparent loss

Or maybe player B had no more covert turns and was lazy to do one attack turn attack using stats page prefering the attack 15ats button?

Or maybe Player B has ridiculous strike planets and MS and 70% of his army is mercs which are completely and utterly expendable.
Or... maybe Player B likes naq and wants more ME, thereby attacking people for stupid amounts of naq to gain ME in the guise of farming.
Or perhaps its all of the above combined with the fact that said Player B wants to mass people and goes about provoking people by hitting them for stupid amounts of naq, leading them to attacking back/saying something stupid, thereby granting Player B perceived reason to mass, thus.. raising ME and getting some "fun".
Just a few ideas I had.

For some of us, the profit is in antagonizing others.

Indeed if it says you lose 50k units it might seem a lot to the person you have hit but if like 30-40k are mercs its really not much being killed as mercs cost really NOTHING at all.
Also like goodie said when you need naq fast a lot of people tend to hit people that they normally wouldnt just cause they need it then are there.

Usually 2/3 of the killed attackers are mercs.

10k supers is 7.5 bill to buy the UU and some change to train up, 15 AT's around 1.8 bill, repair bill and replacement Ms parts need factoring in, so if you steal 12 bill you're making profit, but pretty minimal profit.
So for 10 bill i would say no, it's not profitable to steal unless you are losing a lot less than 10k supers.

You can go higher than 1/35..trust me

Like 10bil naq on 350bil def?
Hmmm that's not profitable hit at all, that's just profitable incase of a war lol

In my mind regardless of Attack Planets or MS, a profitable hit should get more Naq than the cost of repairs and the value of the number of supers lost with no comebacks.
UU are selling at 750 Bill per Mill so if 50K supers are lost, allow a couple of Bill for repairs to weapons/MS and you should be stealing at least 40 Bill Naq to make it worth while.
But there are other reasons for doing non profit hits like if you need Naq in a hurry or you want to reduce your strike or if you just want to deny others their income with daily losses to keep them small.

People are also not taking into consideration that many people are able to buy UU and as many as they want as much lower prices than the average black market price and the same goes for AT.
It really is impossible to figure out if someone elses hits are profitable or not. The only person who knows if it is profitable or not is the person doing it.
If some1 purchases UU at 700mil/k and AT at 80bil/k the naq stolen to be profitable is going to be very different to some1 who purchased them at 750mil/k and 130bil/k.

That's not true, the point isn't that they might be able to buy them cheaper, it's the fact that they can SELL them for that price and save themselves the AT's, repairs, MS parts etc used up in an unprofitable hit.
