No problem.
lois Lane wrote:I regret to say this, but you appear to have lost focus.Semper wrote:the psychological help could be viewed as a double edged sword, especially for someone like myself. I can agree with and totally sympathise with their goals that all humans should be equal and seek to better themselves in a society without internal war and crime etc etc (almost Star Trek society 101...) but I see such goals as impossible to attain and fool hardy. The idea that humans are basically good seems very odd to me, as it would need a indepth discussion as to what exactly GOOD is, as without logic and true intelligence in society good does not exist (as that is what I believe...but thats complicated..)
What are we discussing here? The innate goodness or lack thereof of man, or Scientology in all its aspects?
If we are discussing Scientology, then the "discussion about the innate goodness or lack thereof of man" has no place here. Scientology does not remark upon the goodness of man, nor does it have any intention of getting itself involved in a philosophical debate ad nauseas.
Not at all. You fail to see a bigger picture here. Scientology does believe that man is basically good, you cannot refute my claim with simple statements. then again I cannot remember my source.
You know me, i argue philosophy more than anything. Good and evil are in this day and age illogical perceptions of society, the two are more and more becoming intermingled. As one of the foundational beliefs of Scientology is that man is basically good, then I find myself questioning it's credibility in the same ways I go for christianity and other ancient religions.
The fact whether man is good or not, is by no means everything, or perhaps even pivotal to a decision made on Scientology, but it is a flaw that I have pointed out.
If you like, it is the corner of a much larger argument.
lois lane wrote:That did not really make sense to me, I think. Correct me if I am wrong here while paraphrasing you: "The idea about the basic goals of Scientology as I attempted to outline before is good." I would beg to differ, as you outlined incorrectly and cannot qualify that outline as such.Semper wrote:Then as I mentioned before the basic idea (basic) that I mentioned above is good.
well I was referring to my original post. (Aliens seeding the earth and all that stuff) if you are questioning that and calling that very raw and basic description of their religious beliefs wrong. Prove it so and I will nod and accept it. if not, nope..lol.
lois lane wrote:Semper wrote:We also have to decide whether we are discussing the principles of scientology or the church of. As IF memory serves (I have still to even open a different tab about scientology, but I doubt I will..) they both potentially have different 'taboo' aspects.
So far, it would seem we have been discussing Scientology in all (that is in no specific) aspects? I would agree to continue to humour you in a discussion as long as it relates to Scientology, and does not drag itself down in the golden mud of philosophical debate.
Everything bogs down to philosophy. It always does. We can avoid going into the hard line philosophical things, but a light touch of philosophy always has it uses, especially when a belief relies on something like good and evil.
If this debate where to continue as informed as you wish Lois, I would applaud you to start showing us some sources to back up your claims and statements if our points are not up to your desired standard.

LOL ^
I think the whole idea of this is very interesting to think about but I don't think it should be taken seriously to be honest, I read about 2 hours worth of wiki pages on Scientology and links to xenu and the works, from what I gathered before I got freakishly bored outta my skull was that this demon/alien guy threw a bunch of people into a volcano and nuked them all or something to join their souls together or something a few trillion years ago lmao. Apparently the "ships" he/they/it used looked "exactly" the same as some modern day airplanes without the "fans"...
I would like to know if this Hughes guy or whatever his name is was smoking some whackeh tabackeh while creating this "religion" ^_^
That's my point of view on the subject ^_^

Interesting subject to discuss in a forum of a game based off a show that includes aliens with snakes in their heads building the pyramids centuries ago then abandoning the planet.
Anyway, seeing that nut Tom Cruise jump up and down on Oprahs couch and call Brook Shields names is enough to make me wonder. All in all, looks like a cult to me. Still its a bit surprising how many well know actors/actresses are members of it.

They started to believe the stories they acted on cinema...
Indeed said that way, Goa'ulds seem to be part of some sect, difference being it's from tv show and not part of actual religion...for most of us.

not as much as you might think. the scientologists specifically target celebrities. its one of their policies to recruit as many famous faces as possible. the reasons i guess are:
1) they are rich and can give more cash to the 'church'
2) they make scientology seem more glamourous and mainstream
3) to attract more new recruits.
although there are some surprising members of scientology. . . john travolta, Nancy Cartwright, Jason Lee, Beck and many others

yeah i agree with you about scientology because when i heard and read about it . and how they believe the human race started it reminded me of a movie i saw a long time ago i cant rember the name though . and plus looking at it logically i mean the way they say the earth was formed defies the laws of nature

Re: Scientology: good or bad?
This topic really started off well but has already become a mudslinging contest.
Where is the contribution there?
People find something within their own religions. Its my view that people find they have an essential need for religion, that it fills a niche within them. It can make them feel respite when they feel they need it. It can give them an outlet to share themselves with a group of people that share their beliefs.
Everyone has the right to their own choice of religion. I don't care whether they believe that God sits in a cloud throwing lightning all day or that humans grew like plants at the beginning of time. What they do with their money is their own choice. Unless it's just an Irish thing, the Catholic Church takes annual dues as well as passing a basket around during mass in most parishes, no amount is requested for the dues, that is left open to what you wish to pay, however an contribution is expected. If I had 4,300 dollars though, I'd picture a new fridge, washing machine and dryer for my flat and probably some new jewellery for my girlfriend. Someone else will think "Wow, I can afford that new hunting gun I've been saving for". Someone can give out that both are expenditures on material objects. Someone can complain that a hunting gun can be used to kill someone. Hell, if I dropped my fridge on you from a height.....will you walk away?.....thought not.
Every religion has its flaws. If I started listing the ones I believed exist, then I'd be moving even more off-topic. It must be pointed out as people should not forget that whatever your belief someone will have a different one and they will be entitled to it. You dont have to like someone's beliefs but at least have the decency not to attack them for it.
Uproar about different religions is just related to how public they are at the time. Tom Cruise has put Scientology into the limelight after his appearance on Oprah. It will die down again in a few years unless something else crops up. Kabbalah was in the news a lot when Madonna joined it.
On the back of that though, I will have to say BAD for Scientology because it just doesn't sit well with me. I acknowledge that it has devout members like any other belief system but it has too many things that I cannot agree with.
