A modest 50k here.

I'll probably just leave it where it is for now. There are more than enough people in my alliance who are better equipped, and no doubt more adept, at taking planets.

Let's say you already have 10 planets or you have less than that and you don't what to take anymore planets, do you really need a big fleet or is ok to have 0 or at least 50k.

Depending on yoru allaince, you probably have orders to keep only 9 planets, so that in a war, you may steal planets from the enemy.

because abandoning a planet is impossible?

Who would want to abandon their proper 10th planet,as a proper 10th would be like the first 9, massive + probably a dual, this is why you leave the 10th slot open, or just leave it filled with a crappy planet, you can abandon in times of war.
I think a good strat is too find big planets in time of peace and sell them on your 10th slot, then in times of war that 10th slot can be used to take planets from your enemies.

I know of someone with 270k fleet hangars, which would be the someone who has my old account. Orpheus I think has higher than me tho. THats with the MS techs btw.
