Yay... my war enemies are also supporting me!

Hey, I signed up an so should everyone else. It really is a cause that needs to be supported. Whales are incredible creatures and should be protected. If a petition goes around to save pigeons I say let them die but the whales need to be saved.

Well, well. It's not only a petition. It's Hayden Panettiere's, and supported by sponsors with more than 30k $ donations now, which will go to the cause.

Earlier, when Obama was only a candidate, Hayden has asked him for his opinion, and he promised he'll support her cause.
Yesterday, Obama announced that the United States “firmly opposes whaling”.

Not if trying means supporting a petition.

Say you get an absolutely dream like scenario where everyone in Aus / USA signs this thing. How much do you think Japan would care? They wouldn't care at all and do you know why? Because it still hasn't cost them anything. I can guarantee you of the people you get to sign it almost 0 of them will actually boycott Japanese products until the whaling stops. Japanese stuff is cheap and its good, people are going to buy it. This is the first problem with petitions, they are toothless. There's no threat, it's just a list of people saying "pretty, please stop". The second problem with petitions, and the reason the whales would be better off without them, is that once someone signs a petition, they feel they have done their bit and they move on.

Hayden is very pretty but unfortunately that's not enough to save whales. If you and her actually want to make a difference then organise a boycott of Japanese products or find some other leverage. A list of names of people who can't even vote in their country is, as I have said worse than nothing.
