in the instance that you quote here, id say mercs are a waste for you, actually if you can find good enough farms you can go with 1 man and 1 gun. but, id keep all SS armed no matter what.
Ok, not to sound stupid but I've heard only send one man with a weapon lots of times but still don't understand it. Everytime I attack/raid no matter what screen I use, it only gives me the option of turns not numbers to send? the only one that I get that for are the lifers or spies?[/quote]
LOL its ok I understand your confusion.
Untrain all you can, since you can't untrain SS then let them die and do not replace them.
You do not have an option as to how many men you send, but you do have the option as to how many you have trained.
If you are infact hitting 0 def farms, then all you need is 1 weapon, and you pay a 1 weapon repair bill, or you can arm them all and pay a much higher repair bill for no extra gain.

Thanks for that advice but I think I'll keep my SS alive since I hit active with some pretty hefty defense too. Only once per player unless they retaliate and get stupid, then they are fair game.

Then you seem to be doing the correct thing. keep a few mercs around to keep your guns manned, if you need a small power boost then use mercs.
oh, and when you hit the plague limit, mercs come in handy there as well. They die along with your soilders so it lessens the blow

So say packing 635K attack supers with an additional 200K mercs is a waste of money?
that depends
1 how many weapons?
if you have 850K weapons then no its not a waste
if you have 500K weapons then yes it is
2. how do you play
if you attack alot and lose att soilders alot mercs are a cheap cannon fodder so its not a waste
if you dont attack much and they sit there then yes it is a waste
sorry, this topic is old, but I thought it better than starting a new topic...
if you have unarmed mercs, don't they still protect your supers by dieing first?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure unarmed mercs do apsolutely nothing.

its a fine line actually, its like a double edged sword. The losses are calculated on "total" men in the strike. So more total men = higher total losses. The mercs do die along side the SS. So, on the low end of the scale its a good idea to have mercs to help protect your SS, but on the high end having unneeded armed men can cost you more losses because of the high "total" of manpower.
that make sense?

no... actually you sort of lost me...
I see it a little bit... but it's still murky.

(and the mercs in question are unarmed...

)

basicly, if you DONT need the men in stike then dont put them there.
say you have 100K SS, you lose 1000 per turn
well if you buy 100K mercs, then you lose 2000 per turn
*generic numbers used only for example*
