russell..... crowe..... rabbitto's...... oh lawd....... WHERE THE HECK IS ANTHONY LAPAGLIA (sp?) WHEN YOU NEED HIM? SOCCER. i dont understand it.
*fake falls down and cries over hurt leg*
*stands up to take a penalty shot*
umm.....
Keanu i agree isnt a good actor..... i mean seriously, from an idiot teenager (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, or Parenthood....) to an emotionless dolt.... (matrixes...... speed.... oohmg.....) one emotionless and the other being well over the top...... couch jumping anyone?
i prefer an actor who can change personality between roles and not just be typecast. no, that doesnt mean i disloke the roles he played, he was entertaining in matrix/parenthood/whatever else, but he didnt display much skill. same with Adam Sandler. yes, amusing, but omg HAI MR. PENGUIN. *pees on something then harasses golfing superstars while swearing and getting drunk/high/both*
tldr, keanu MIGHT do ok for the role.
and before anyone cuts in with the inevitable 'its not in line with the original manga/anime', i find that a pointless argument. as long as it can be good on its own, NOT TO BE COMPARED...... oh for gods sake, Major Motoko Kusanagi of Section 9 in Ghost in The Shell? anyone compare the manga her to the SAC version? or movie to SAC? manga to movie? both the movie and the series' portray her as the cool headed paramilitary genius hacker and all that..... in the manga, she spends most of the time drunk, or high on some hallucenogen (sp?).
it was different, but each the movie, manga and SAC series' were good in their own right. hopefully they can achieve something like this.
different does not always equal bad. i mean in the musical sense, we have Atreyu. they held to one major style for most of their albums apart from one. "Lead Sails, Paper Anchor" seemed to flop only because those goddamn fanboys couldnt accept change. for gods sake it isnt their regular style, so what? if it were released under an alter band name then it wouldve done much better. just down to monikers and fanboys. by itself it was a good album.
tldr2: different style not always bad, look at GiTS.
(these rants are how you know when im tired. quite seriously, i have no idea if i slept or not last night. yaaaaay cola and energy drinks..... *collapses*)

first of all soccer(Football) is a great game don't knock it
secondly GET SOME SLEEP
finaly no different isn't bad but if you change it to no longer represnt the same thing GIVE IT A DIFFERENT NAME. now the movie may be great keanu revees may give a great performence and change my mind about his acting and the changes may be superficial and not detrementail, i won't know till i see it but my hopes are not high on any anime or manga to real life conversion

1, im not knocking soccer, just that BS call in that match for FIFA i think it was (i dont watch it reularly) between Australia and Italy, the faked tripping and w/e.
2, good point. i did. and shall soon again.
3, name change not necessary. i'll note it again for you all.
-ghost in the shell manga = most of the lead charachters are drunken/drugged up idiots.
-ghost in the shell movies = lead charachters more serious.
both good on own, no namechange.
or another example.
Lord of the rings books - fantastic books (so im told, havent read them for myself) and have a cult following.
lord of the rings movies - not accurate to the books aparrently. still with its cult following.
maybe if i wasnt clear enough ill say it slightly different.
sure, it may be different, sure it may be not like the original, but give it a chance to prove itself before condemning it. GiTS and LoTR turned out to be great successes, so why not this?
just a pet peeve that ppl will complain about it being different and ignore it for what it is/might be, or before theyve even seen it.
all im trying to say is give it a chance. if its genuinely crap in the end, so be it. but if its a good movie, maybe not accurate tro the original, dont knock it. maybe its a fresh enterpretation on it?
lets just wait and find out, and hope it isnt bad. in the meantime, dont compare it to an unattainable goal if you beleive it so. looking at the anime alone i agree its awesome. looking at the idea for a movie of it with actual actors and whatnot in comparison doesnt match up, but if looked at on its own, worse movie ideas than a ragtag group of mercs on a spaceship have done well in hollywood.
(tbh i think it might do badly but i want to see it before i say anything difinitive.)

ok my bad that was rediculous damn cheating fools then went on to win
don,t get me wrong not all conversions need a name change only some and it dosent have to be completly different the star treck's all have a tack on name as do the stargates thats all i ask, call it "Neo-cowboy beebop" (ok stupid i know) and if the characters dont change then theres no need for even that but for instance if spike is suddenly an ex-marine or ex-cop type then it needs a new name i doubt they will do this but who knows
while the goast in the shells may have changed only seen the movies ( i know shame on me) if they really went from drunk to serious i would have liked a tack on name. i agree you shouldn't compare but you shouldn't try to use the popularity of something to sell something else either, by having that name it has to live up to expectaion if it cant it should have a new name

Faye wears Skimpy clothing and has big boobs.
I do not think Abby can play that role.

It all comes down to a matter of whether or not the keep to the spirit of the material.
You mentioned LOTR Solus...well, the truth of the matter is that the movies kept to the spirit of the books. Not every scene was shown as it was in the books, and a great deal was left out...mostly due to time constraints...however they kept the spirit, or core, of the story intact...and chose excellent actors to portray characters...so it was good...
DBZ: Evolution did no such thing, they changed the core story...and didn't keep to the spirit of the show...except in the case of Master Roshi...all but one of the actors was really, really bad...I'd complain about story too, but honestly; anyone who thinks DBZ ever had a serious story has mental problems...
Mr. Reeves isn't my favorite actor...he's pretty much a one trick pony as far as I can tell...but one thing gives me hope for the movie...he's an avid fan, the reason it's getting made basically boils down to this: Keanu went to Japan and begged the owners of the material, on his knees, to let him make a movie about it...
One of the main reasons LOTR was so good was because Peter Jackson is an avid fan of the books...he made sure it was up to par...
So, if Keanu can manage to find a good director, and good actors to play the various parts; then we might yet see a half-way decent Cowboy Bebop live action...He should be able to do a fair impression of Spike...after all, Spike's not exactly the most expressionate individual...

you hit the nail on the head somewhat. (old thread too.... lols)
though i still hold the opinion that if its different from the original then there is no reason to condemn it, including if it sways from the source/core. just saying that just because something is different doesnt mean its bad. i'd like the movie to stay true to the anime, but if it doesnt, it may branch out somewhere and start something good. the spirit of the GiTS manga and the series (S.A.C) was an example, i guess more fitting. both different, both fantastic in their own right.
should be okay, just as long as they dont make Faye, Jet and Spike all brothers and sisters..... and do the 'For Kids' treatment, or giving spike a lollypop instead of the smoke, that would make me vomit. perpetually.

Well...I can't speak regarding GiTS...I only ever watched the anime and the movies...but if that's the case, and the core story is that different...then the anime should have been called something else...
The way I see it, if you change the core story...then you have no right to use the name...because you're not telling that story...
Not saying its bad, just wrong...
As to the second part...I'll be there puking alongside you...
Making them siblings would be a core story changing situation...
That, and, the cigarette Spike smokes is as much a character as Ein...
