Don't get tetchy. If you want a thread about "greatest heroes" then make one about that, don't complain just because you don't know the full connotations of what you're asking for.
point taken, but i assumed you lot would would take the hint from the names i posted...
what is it they say about
assumption?!?!

you cannot fault someone for placing a man like Hitler on a greatest personalities list considering he was charismatic enough to revolutionize the entire German Societal Structure so Avenger you would have to be more specific
however I would have to go with:
Oscar Wilde - simply amazing insight and just beautiful utterly beautiful ability with words his writings can change a persons understanding and outlook of/on life
Bobby Kennedy - the only Kennedy worthy of any recognition imo he never backed down and started the crack down on organized crime breaking most major Mafia control in major cities to minimal status compared to what it once was
Winston Churchill - arguably one of the greatest war-time leaders any country could ever have the privilege of having along with FDR however I consider Churchill just a step above because he knew immediately what was necessary and he worked to no end to try and meet those requirements even "buying" US surplus not to mention his political maneuvering is unquestionable

I would consider more JFK, Martin Luther King (Universe, Semper and Angnoch provided some other interesting people who would deserve the title) in this list than hitler himmler stalin and co...
Sure those people are famous and had legions of brainwashed people following them. But if you want to list them, do at least a consequent list of people who achieved positive/"neutral" things (effectively or in people's mind).
Einstein work was awesome, but indirectly helped creation of nukes. Though, it wasn't really his goal (or am I wrong? Didn't do sciences studies, I don't know very much on the subject). However, people like Hitler, Stalin or Himmler can't have same dilemna regarding them. They didn't do something resulting to another, they did the bad thing for the bad thing itself! It's a big difference!
I did a list in past about great people of this century in this forum and did put those:
Martin Luther King (don't think I should explain)
General de Gaulle (more for national reasons and WW2 position, it's a french thing)
Jean Paul II (Pope of the opening, of tolerance, a pope that really gave a positive image about catholicism)
Albert Einstein (his scientist work)
John Maynard Keynes (his system worked pretty well at least for thirty years)
George Marshall (Marshall plan)
JFK (one of most popular US presidents post WW2, died to early)
Konrad Adenauer (founder of federal republic of Germany, one of major people in the origins of EU)
I could go on...but chose not to!
Churchill is one of those people who really deserve (more) to be in such list than the bunch of butchermen dictators. The one who never gave up no matter what.
Universe wrote:My personal 'hero' of all time got a little ga-ga in the end too, so as not to be a hypocrite, I'll lay off Tesla.
But the perpetuum mobile and free energy are fantasy.

Just curious, who's your "personal hero"?

I'm kind of a physics guy and Telsa Rocks.
The equations he developed concerning electromangnetivity, magnetic feilds, and energy feilds and transmission are brilliant. And he was a friend of the Twain. But he was also kind of a bigot
concerning einsteins theory of relativity...magnificent mathematical garb which fascinates, dazzles and makes people blind to the underlying errors. The theory is like a beggar clothed in purple whom ignorant people take for a king ... its exponents are brilliant men but they are metaphysicists rather than scientists ..
brilliant with electricity, not so good with the gravity.
Avenger's question is hard to answer objectively; so i won't bother..
Jean Piagiet(sp?)
Einstein (great hair)

He was shot two days later for his 'crimes' his name was Wang Ai-min.
(or at least thats the identity I choose to believe is correct, I believe there are several names each with as much proof as the others. We may never know which if any is true unfortunately)
and at the end of the whole thing Chen Xi-Tong, Mayor of Beijing in his report to the Politburo of the Communist Party of China had the utter cheek to write 'During the whole operation, no-one, including those who refused but were forced to leave, died.'

no, that's curiosity which killed the proverbial cat, assumption is the mother of all **Filtered** ups.
Thriller, your choice for a great personality-Tank Man, (Tank Man because i wouldn't want to give him a name that could be wrong), is a shinning example of the power of 1...
great choice indeed

Woodrow Wilson?

why include him for heavens sake?? he's the moron that caused the Federal Reserve act to pass!!!
"I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men."
-Woodrow Wilson, after signing the Federal Reserve into existence
and just 2 names of those "dominant men": John Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie....
well would you look at that! those names are also on your list

Wilson because he guided us through WW1 and did what a president should, leave generalling to the generals and focus on social and economic issues. He was also hella balls to the wall awesome.
Carnegie and Rockefeller were kings of industry on which a powerful manufacturing united states was forged, a united states crushed by beuracractic nonsense and over-powered unions.

My 3 would be
Winston S Churchill- Was someone who would stand up to Hitler and warned of the threat of the Soviet Union. He was someone who never failed to take responsibility for his shortcomings and supported his government until the very end.
Mohandas Gandhi- Helped to gain Indian Independence through non violent resistance. Laid the groundwork for MLK's epic work during the civil rights movement
Bruce Lee- Brought Martial Arts to the Western consciousness. Redefined what martial arts is by shunning the traditional teachings embracing what would be known as Jeet Kun Do. Father of Mixed Martial Arts. Owned Chuck Norris.

Most influential men of the 20th Century
I would list Gandhi among them, Dr. King and many other 'reformers' in a similar mould use him as their example.
Churcill, a great 'war time' leader. People thrive on brave leadership and inspiration and he provided that for the British people.
Hitler, his actions had a butterfly effect on the rest of the world. We still feel those today.
I don't include scientists or inventors because I believe if they hadn't discovered or theorised something, some one else would have eventually taken their place. For instance the Wright brothers weren't the only ones working on planes. If they hadn't existed, someone else would have claimed the credit. The growth of human knowledge doesn't depend on the indivual but on humanity's collective need.
