No IMO that would happen without any contact with us.If they were just hovering in the sky for a period of few month. They would be nuked in less then a month time if they wouldnt respond to our calls and believe me that if this thread goes live that you will get a reason why they would be bombed.Answer would go somewhere like this:"they were asking for it,who do they think they are hovering in mid-air..."And similar kind of non-tolerant rubbish. And that side of humanity always prevail because its laud and ignorant.
I cant imagine a scenario where there would be nice and peaceful exchange of thoughts with paranoid part of humanity is shooting at them with all they got(not literary shooting). It would be something like "weapons of mass destruction" happening all over again.

Edit:

I just saw you posted Jack.Well never saw a sci-fi movie like this but taken our collective paranoia this is what I think would happen.

Those 3 points are in fact taken from some Isaac Asimovs novel but sadly I cant remember nor cant find its name.He just wrote to much of it :).About dumbing stuff on our planet I meant literary cleaning their bilge tanks, like airliner does it when flying across the ocean. They were choosing a place to dumb their **Filtered** and they found Earth to be the most polluted planet in Solar system.

They were ironic remarks because If aliens were to make contact to us then I think they are on same level as we are and they would be here just to exploit us.If they surpassed that then they have no business doing here other then study us.

And for the last part, would you say its not truth that all wars were produced by minority but realized with help of masses?

What was the recent-ish sci-fi movie in which the aliens landed, got surrounded by the army & then as E.T. was reaching out his hand in greeting someone shot him?

I thought at the time that was hillarious precisely cos it was most likely to be true lol.

your thinking of the horrendously bad remake of "The Day the earth stood Still", the original is far superior.

I think we'd mess it up. We're humans. It's what we do.

There's an amazing two books by Mary Doria Russell, "The Sparrow" and "Children of God", which describe the possibilities of a first contact scenario. They're probably two of the saddest and most moving pieces of writing which I've ever come across, so well worth a look if you're interested in contemplating such a scenario.

Well the thought to create the topic came to me as I was watching season 4 of farscape, the episode where Crichton is watching a recorded TV broadcast from earth about the first contact with moya's crew.
