WoT was very good, but especially in the later books things seemed to .. waffle. I also don't think it has the long term re-readability to be classed as 'best fantasy series ever'

Sword of Truth.. is nice for what it is. From the 5 or so I've read so far.. each seems to be pretty similar to last one. Currently wondering if I want to watch the tv show #-o

Song of Fire & Ice, I liked very much. Great series, one of the only ones that I didn't find predictable. Same as the original Donaldson novels, thoroughly original.

Best ever though? For me would likely go to something more along the lines of LoTR.

Keep in mind that Robert Jordan was writing those last books while fighting the very disease that killed him in 2007. He had been told that he was going to die, yet he continued to write and even plan to write several new series once he was done with the WoT series.

If I was an author and was informed that I would be dead in the matter of years, I think it is possible that the way I write my books might change with my impending death bearing down on me...

I wasn't talking about the last few books though.. from about 4 thru til 12?

A lot of long running fantasy series, author status aside, suffer from drifting off on tangents to 'fill' pages and add more to the series. As if the story should have spanned 3-4 books, and was pushed out to x3 that.

They're a nice read sure, but I don't hold them anywhere close to the Best Fantasy Series of all time.

I am saying that of all the fantasy books series i have read, WoT was the most entertaining, and was overall the most brilliant of those that i have read.

Plus, we are all entitled to our own opinions, Sammael and I obviously are huge fans of the WoT series, but that doesnt mean everyone else has to agree with us.

So?

I don't mean to be harsh, but the circumstances under which an author writes a book doesn't give them an automatic 'get out of jail free' card with regard to its content. I'm sorry that Robert Jordan died, as he was clearly someone with a huge talent and a huger imagination, but that doesn't alter the fact that his last few books were crap. Predictable, unimaginitive and repetitive crap.

The best was and always is - Lord of the rings. 1st is best ;)

My favourite is WoT though. I agree lots of waffle and scene setting but they are awesome. Love the story line.
