like make planet defenses cost say, 1/5th of current price?

No that'd be insane. The planet prices are roughly okay at the moment, the highest fleet in the game with some considerable naq invested can just about take about any planet, Accept for those with all 3 PDP's massively built, but evne if it cant outright take them via mass it can still damage the PDP's.
What you could do with Defence to make it a bit fairer on those trying to hold planets is to do this. Decrease the step up in cost. Atm its 2x cost.
At Mindblowing, 500k def goes from 90 bil a click to 180 bil a click at 500,001 to 600,000 This pattern continues from thier, It basically makes 500k def the maximum for most people, 600k for the slightly naqudah blessed, but 700k is the maximum for anyone with insane naqudah gathering skillz.
What I propose is the following.
Decrease the step up, from 2x per 100k, too 1.5x per 100k.
Then Defence Price will go.
500k = 90 bil.
500k-600k = 135 bil.
600k-700k = 202.5 bil.
700k-800k = 303.75 bil.
800k-900k = 455.625 bil.
The price will still become rapidly insane but at a slightly less crazy rate.
Instead of 500k being the max for most people, making the price increase redundant as apposed to just max'ing the Defences at 500k. They will be able to afford to go to 600k quite easily.
Normally the insane naqudah gatherer's will be at 700k defence on thier planet, but with this update the same amount of naqudah will take them to more like 850k Defence, while this isnt a lot more, it is sufficient.
Now-a-days pretty much anyone who puts a little effort in fleet can get past 500k def, with the suggested improvements it will be a little more challenging. The highest fleet in the game will still have plenty of fleet power to break through any normal defence put with PDP's they can still be bounced off.
As apposed to having 1 planet protected with defences and 1 with merlins, people who invest enough naqudah should be able to protect 2 with defences and 1 with merlins.

Or, make it a linear scale like what fleets costs are. Why should someone building fleets, have an advantage of being able to have linear cost increases, whilst planets are exponential
Especially with the recent "boosts" to fleets. First they got 2x the power (but at 2x the cost, oh no, no 22m/fleet instead of 12m/fleet... what ever shale we do), coupled with an extra 30% boost thanks to techs.
Fleet power went from being (for simplicity sake) from 1 power, to 2.6 power, in a matter of a month. (2x power, then 30% tech)

While making planet defences linear will make things "fairer" its eventual outcome will be players with 10 un-takeable planets via defences, just as it was before the Fleet/PDP update. Where people complained that planets were too hard to take. And that they werent supposed to be permanent but take-able assets.
Tbh I dont mind it how it is now.

They were probably complaining cause someone put 100k defenses, and they couldn't take it with their 1k fleets, and so had to moan and complain, basically due to their own lack of skill..
And how would they be untakable. They only seemed that way, because the same resources spent on a MS is distributed amongst 3 aspects. If they focused on fleets and their planet taking capabilities, they'd be ALOT more effective. Same as if someone decided that, along with upgrading planet defenses, they'd also build larger defense, and increase UP at the same time. Of course their going to FEEL that planet defenses are less effective, but in reality, their shooting themselves in the foot
