Avatar is great because of the visual effects. The story is absolute crap and that's coming from someone that's seen Avatar multiple times in the theaters. Avatar is more of an event, then Hurt Locker which is more of a movie.

Hurt Locker has better character development than Avatar, a much much better story, and is intense from start to finish. It took the war movie genre in a different direction than your stereotypical war movie. Avatar, while visually stunning, has the same plot as Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, Ferngully, etc. Again, that's not to say that I disliked Avatar, it's just that it wasn't an "Oscars-worthy" movie.

in short this film is crap IMO.

I cannot believe I wasted a couple of hours of my life on watching this dribble (sadly I couldn't turn it off was round a friends house, would have been a bit rude to just leave lol....although was so damn tempting).

it winning the oscars probably says a lot....so many films throughout history has won multiple oscars, to then be resigned to the scrapheap thereafter

Don't see it with that mind set. How much a movie makes doesnt mean much, imo. 3 of the top 10 Highest Grossing Worldwide of All Time movies are Harry Potter films. 2012, which was absolute crap, is 31. Transformers 2 is 21 of all time. Are any of these movies good? Not really.
