However, Brdavs, as much as I see this irony, it's not -yet- really the same. It has similarities indeed. But talibans bombed willingly this buddha. Americans deteriorate this site in long term, which isn't acceptable either, but the way and purpose is different.
It's damaging due to sitting troops ignorance, while for talibans, it was bombing due to ignorance. I'm sure soldiers don't try to damage it knowingly due to some silly ideology, unlike those idiotic talibans. If these soldiers damage it consciously, then shame on them!
Oh come on. Jarheads are what the name implies. Menevolance, hate for the natives, stress and/or just plain entertainment. Result is predicatble by now is it not.
If they dont have reservations in killing or humiliating civilians and small animals and then putting the stuff on youtube than you can be sure some sandnegroe heritage wont give them much pause. There was a case not long ago when a UN peacekeeper from coroatia stationed in W.Sahara wrote "x croamry" over some 6000 year old cave painting. The guy was muppet enough to do that, sign his name so they could track him down no less, and all this in a far less demanding a situation than that in Afg.
Infact I can show more understanding for the taliban. Atleast they blow those up knowing what they were doing and for a specific, albeit noncondonable, reason. AA appars to be a bunch of ignorant muppets, from the top brass that thought stationing there was a good idea down, and whats more thats apparently supposed to be justification to boot.
On a positive note, NATO now has more troops thare than the USSR did. And thats not even counting the contractors. Another hillariously ironic thing when you think about it.

You say exactly the same as I did.
