I've got to say something lol
Since I came back to this game I've been getting PM's etc regarding me joining Omega. And even some talking trash about me and I've also heard about some old friends talking about me behind my back.
I realize before my departure I was in original The Legion with my best friends who were all in there. (Now, there is less then 10% still playing)
I have every confident that if they would play again someday they would not judge me and we'd still be friends.
Takes more then alliance tags to ruin friendships.
And I did not loose my identity - I wanted to be with a group of people I'd fit in with and people I knew.
While I understand your argument, I feel you're being to harsh against certain people.
And let's not forget, the main point of a game is to enjoy it.
How ever, I do like the fact you brought this up, much needed IMO.

Everyone begins at a certain point and on the other hand, all roads lead to Rome
It`s pretty similar to RL, you start with certain expectations, you have your goals, your priorities.
For some time you hold on to them, and keep working hard to get somewhere, to earn some respect and acknowledgement, but later you notice that going such a long time "against the wall" is just holding you back and that`s why you start seeking a different way how to get around it and make it easier for yourself.
I would say that the good old "if you can`t beat them, join them!" defines this case perfectly.
It`s not about losing your identity, joining an alliance which used to be your rival doesn`t mean your personality changed just as joining omega&alpha doesn`t mean you go from being a nice guy to be a douchebag...no offense guys, just an exam
If you work abroad for several years and return back home and decide to settle down and stay finally at home, it doesn`t mean you lost your identity, you just want to be more home than abroad just as snipers or whoever else gets fed up with their guerilla style gameplay and instead welcomes a change by joining ranks with others, even with their enemies
People don`t change, nearly the circumastances

I believe C2 is referring more to the example when a player wars a certain alliance/empire for their entire history as they have some bad blood in-between and was never a part of the alliance/empire, then they decide to join into that alliance/empire even though it was the thing they wanted to destroy and they start fighting their former friends after it and then starts acting all tough against everyone.
I could name a perfect example of someone, but I rather won't.

A interesting topic of conversation C2 I will give you that, but what is the point to it? Slander? Putting yourself upon a pedastal? Jealousy? My question is sincere.

well I still stand behind what I said....
I know what caesar2 meant by his post and again "if you can`t beat them, join them!!"
What you are saying is rather a different case and that particular player may very well be an exception to the rule.
Many players choosed this path before and joined even their enemies, for pitsakes, it`s just a game....
I know many players who joined the "dark side of the force" considering their former alliances but that doesn`t mean they have forgotten about their past relationships or friends that they left on the other side of the fence...you can have a nice fun war even with a friend and the fact that you are on different sides, doesn`t mean you can`t be friends anymore....
joining a stronger side and playing big when you`re not and "dumping" your friends won`t make you any stronger or more respected, you nearly prove to others what kinda douchebag you really are.
Some may not have doubts about such alliance member who joined their ranks, I know I would

They will never know the inner workings of such an empire as DDE, its not perfect and is not for everyone, but there is a reason our member numbers stayed level for so long and have increased slightly as of late..maybe we have $$$$$ the members?

In many ways this game reflects personality, in others, it doesnt. For example, Semper wouldnt hurt a fly in Real life, yet here he is an ogre of horrid deathness. Much the same applies to many here, Replijake is lovely, As is Geisha, EtL when you speak to him alone, is very Humble.
I dont think people lose what they where within empires, i think they simply adapt there ways. Alot of it is people growing up too, The game is so black and white you can see how people change over time, that has alot to do with real life.
Of course you should play the game you love to play, how you want to play it, I like sticking it too the man, Yet i was omega for the best part of 10 months. I know how certain people and alliances play, Sure, there are people who will spend $$$, Have more AB's and Loads of pimped out planets, but wheres the fun in fighting Fire with Fire? Think of new ways to fight the power!
That being said, for every 90 Awesome guys, You come accross ten Pansy Swine who just wanna run with the bad boys. They tend too, however, with time, meet a rather sticky demise.
If you cant beat them, Respect it, surrender, learn, then 6 months later, hit them much harder, and win. Revenge afterall, is a dish best served Cold.
Well, i went off on abit of a tangent...

yes Jedi....agreed
but DDE has it`s members because the alliance gameplay is precisely the one they are looking for.
If you like to mass and be at war etc etc etc then you certainly won`t join some peaceful statbuilding alliance but instead go to DDE or omega or someone else and this applies for both sides.
No statbuilder would ever join DDE because he knows he wouldn`t be able to statbuild
If you skateboard and say that you want to try out snowboarding, does it mean you are changing sides or that you are abandoning skateboarding for snowboarding??? NO!!!

....you simply want to try out something else and that`s the point of the whole "losing identity" nonsense....
this thing about "losing identity" is a little bit overboard imho

Well, that could be right way. But what i dont understand when someone cant win, so he abandons own allaince and friends and joins enemy.

now that`s a totally different case...I thought we were talking mostly about individuals
Never abandoned my alliance even though our enemies were in most cases far superior and stronger....I guess that for me, friends were more than some imaginary power in an mmorpg

There are always exceptions, but sometimes, people are simply overawed by the power of the people they fight. E.g. TAM vs Nemesis, Qacol Squished me to itty bitty shreds. Alot of people in nemesis saw that at the time and wanted to hook up with people like that. Its the power, Wherever the power is, Sheep will follow. Of course i dont mean to call everyone a sheep. Kjarkur is a prime example of something awesome, trying out something different. Places Like Mayhem, DDE etc, Are mighty powerful, Many want in on that for there own reasons, Some are scared, others are warmongers, Most become useful and shaped over time... You really cant black and white all people joining big empires simply because they cant hack fighting them, Of course some do.... Everyone now and then you get a massive chicken, And i for one, Enjoy saying... "buck..buck...buckkkkkk"....
I for one, Would love to See Jedi Tank, Qacol, Tekki and Rodwolf, All come and play for Nemesis, Come'on....

As this group states over and over, people can do what they want, and play how they want..its in the game so why piss and moan about it?
edit: Good post Buck (not just because you mentioned my name

)
I would like to point one thing out in accordance with the title of this thread..Identity...I will use myself as an example..
Came to DDE was basically a stray sheep, became a fighter, then turned masser, then became warmonger then politician/leader and am now a farmer.
Did I lose my identity? No I became more...some say more full of crap, some say more kool, opinions vary but my identity in this game still remains. I will mass you, fight you, farm you, lead you, beat you when it suits the days agenda.
