I dont agree its a "privelege" as such but it definitely appears so, thanks to another issue.

Telstra.

thanks to the government allowing them to hold a monopoly on telecommunication infrastructure, Telstra treat the whole of australia as though they are "privileged" to use their equipment. and I speak from personal experience here.

you know that if you apply to get internet access through an ISP OTHER than Telstra Bigpond, they have to hire a line from Telstra? and when hiring, you have to get a telstra technician to go to the local interchange and devote a port to you? and considering Telstra will sit back and say "its too much effort" or "we aren't offering services in your area" after all that messing around? yeah.

now consider if you go through Bigpond they will make it their priority to get you service?

did you know that in areas they only service with basic broadband packages if not on Bigpond, you can get the top of the line speeds and access if you go through them?

if net access isnt a privilege, Telstra has made it just that.

*shrugs* Huh. Speaking about power abuse.... reminds me of the (former) practices of a few companies here in the Netherlands....

Also, @ filter... it seems to be it is an 'static' filter, not one of those new, advanced 'smart' filters who 'choose' more wise what exactly should get blocked and what not... but for a more massive scale those new type of filters are still pretty expensive, and it sounds like me they wanted to go cheap... which is in the end the more expensive way in general.
