perhaps in their country the actual word Paki has a completely different meaning..

for example I have an irish friend who's name is Judith, she wont let you call her Judy as she says that's Irish for prostitute ( she is in her 70's so it may have changed over there by now)

Well some nicknames are just percieved and used as derogatory terms for a nation. Yanks, Krauts, Russkies, Frenchies...

Plus with pakis you have the added racial dimensions... it just is, no sense of asking why. Chinaman is technically correct when you refer to a man of chineese origin but it is still a slur.

You can take any name for a group of people as a racial slur. Even within Australia the indigenous people are referred officially to as "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders" but call a Torres Strait Islander an Aboriginal and they are offended and vice verse. Even within the Aboriginal groups themselves there are a number of names to describe where they came from (locality wise within Australia) and call them the wrong group it is an offence as well.

As for the offense just because it's mistake about different locality...oh my god the silly sensibility!

Us Welsh are often referred to as Taffs or Taffies, referring to the river Taff and valleys it runs through, I take no offense from this but even if I did, and when it is used in a derogatory way there is no way in hell anyone would be prosecuted for using it as a racial slur.

Whereas calling someone a Paki, even if they are genuinely of Pakistani nationality could and has gotten people prosecuted.

It might seem like double standards when put like that

BUT

Paki has been used as a generalised insult by racists against non-african origin people of darker skin colours for so long that it has now taken on new meaning, and is/has been used far more frequently as a racist slur than it has ever been used as just an abbreviation of nationality.


Language evolves with usage, and the word Paki through negative usage has become a negative word. Therefore it can no longer be used even in a positive or descriptive way for fear of mis-interpretation.




A far more interesting one is the word 'Nigga'. No Pakistani would refer to themselves as a Paki, but African-Americans often seem to call themselves and each other Nigga, yet if a white person says it, it is racist.

I don't know why paki are racist. Maybe they have some bad experiences with other 'groups of people'?

However I tend to notice that whenever Pakistan is in the news for being bad, the Pakistanis refer to themselves as something else.

It can be use as slang, and it can be an insult.

It is like saying Negro or Black Person instead of 'African American'.

One is more poltically correct than the other.

To elaborate:
Paki is a slang term to describe a Pakistani or one of Pakistani descent - used in an intentionally harmless manner.

Although the word can be used with malicious intent.
