Being in Love = Simple chemistry, butterflies, heartbeats etc .. is realy a hormone, Oxytocin, that gets spread in your brain when you think about someone, science pointed out this 'hormone' is around in your head for approx 6 to 8 months. This hormone is the main reason for "short" relationships. As soon as its no longer produced, the "in love" feeling dissappears.

Staying in love = Takes work and understanding with a high level of commitment and willingness to make sacrifices

The reason why relationships in the past seemed to bring forth longer lasting marriages is that people generallly took a few years before getting married.
In the current day and age, everything goes fast, and people rush things.
Couples get married after an odd weekend with eachother in vegas and divorce within a year because the "in love feeling" is gone.
