Cant believe Im actually going to say this but I disagree

1 ) Alliance command structures vary, some have absolute power with the leader, some the HC, some take members votes, and any of these methods can empower a diplomat to make agreements within certain limits, send a diplomat to a meeting saying you can concede point A, point B we would like if possible, but point C is deal breaker, etc

2 ) The qualities that make a great leader dont always make a great good diplomat or negotiator.

3 ) The go-between role even serves a purpose, though not a very noble one as a face saver, appearance does matter and any leader who approaches his enemy with talk of peace immediately appears the weak, just the act of a leader approaching their enemy with talk of peace can give the enemy the confidence to continue or demand more from any agreement.

There was a time when I mocked diplomats, lets face it in a war game the peacemakers can often be portrayed as weak, but after having a go at it once or twice I found a new respect for them, keeping your cool, be careful with your wording, and restraining your personal feelings is incredibly difficult, give me a nice simple massing any day.

Well Said :smt050

Been a Leader and been a Diplo and I really do prefer the Diplomatic role....

You have to remember that each HC structure does indeed differ and the Words spoken by your alliance representative can have far reaching consequences. Diplomats have the capability to forge many things - War....Peace and anything in between and this is just with Words :P. Personally I think its an art in itself. One which can either reaps the spoils of War or the growth of Friendship.

if a leader can't be a diplomat then he isn't a good leader since a leader needs to be all around good to take care of his/her alliance. if someone sends a diplomat who can't realy do anything then it's pointless, cuz if every sugestion has to be bounced back to a HC and then wait a cople of days to come back with a counter proposal you're not getting anywhere

and since it's quote day:

"don't bring a knife to a gunfight"

"you can get more with a kind word and a gun, then with just a kind word"

LOL - decent quotes

Leader doesnt have to be the greatest diplomat really. It all depends on your setup. The setup I am in allows me alot of authority to negociate so Andy and I take alot of the diplomatic workload off the leadership. Now there are a few things I have to refer back to the leadership which is normal....

Still a Diplomatic Flair in a Leadership Role does help and in some regards a Leader and Diplomat arent all that different but that doesnt negate the Diplomat and his role. :smt110 :smt106

My favorite quotes about diplomacy.

Shouldn't all these diplomats be saving this game via the GALACTIC ALLIANCE instead of making a thread solely to French kiss one another and admire your reflections?

And in response to what Zeek said; alliance leaders create meaningless titles such as 'diplomat', 'head of recruitment', 'strategy office number four' in order to make the little people, IE cannon fodder, feel like they're more than just X percent of that alliance's power. It's a way of keeping the idiots on board.

The Galactic Council I presume you are referring to....Thats a topic which required a whole new thread but yes there should be more effort to try and at least see if we can effect some positive change as for the rest of your posting:

How nice....remind me to spank you when I forget how to be diplomatic and respectful about something. :smt043

Some may use diplomats as old toothless tigers but whenever I was diplomat i made it my own. I set diplomatic policy with the leaders. Not wait around for leaders to determine policy and then send you to repeat the words. Wouldnt be much of a Head Diplomat if you dont have part say and control over the policy you are wording every day... :smt110 :smt110 :smt110

Maybe i could include you as an addition to any New Diplomatic Policy i get to shape in the future Mordack :smt025
