lol... as I am sure many of us have heard, myself included...

morons driving into lakes and off the end of the city pier and such... :smt081

(hint: drive carefully, especially in unfamiliar surroundings...)

though apparently it's quite good in Perth, and perhaps Beijing?

plus, compared to working off an upside-down map, I'll go with GPS. :-$

That is more related to general stupidity and outdated maps than precision.

It is rare for a handheld GPS to have a reliable precision below 10m or so. Last GPS we worked with (last weekish) can, if held correctly, give realtime position on the millimeter. That is a precise GPS.

I am sure that the US military is quite interested in such product.

I don't see a need for an average person to have a GPS closer than... 3 meters?

10m is still quite good... as long as you are not launching artillery shells at such target. :-"

The US military probably has more than a few of those GPS sets... Very practical for things like surveying...

SatNavs, or as they are know locally, To-Stupid-To-Read-A-Map-Nav

Round my way these things are constantly directly lorries down narrow residential streets where they get stuck and block the roads. The things are a bloody menace.

that is because they aren't programmed properly... They are an annoyance in Norway as well... Not unusual for southeast European drivers to be directed onto the "shorter" route across a narrow mountain pass roads with a trailer, where the road is barely suitable for small private vehicles...
They are unfortunately often programmed only with physically shortest route, not whatever route is most efficient.
