Now you know someone else Thel, even if it does take us 6 SMS pages. ;)

Text 'speak' deserves to be banned. People need to stop being lazy, turn on T9 and learn to spell.

It really makes me laugh when you see words that are supposed to be abbreviated in text speech that are exactly the same length as their correctly spelled equivalents.

And George! Holy freakin' cow me old cockney mucker!

I despise T9. It always replaces the intended word with one that is not even close. It makes the conversations funny sometimes, but I refuse to use T9.

I think some use is okay... by some I mean only lol, imo, and brb. Not of that other bull where people throw letters where they don't belong. Or even numbers where letters go!!! :smt093

Incidentally, they are learning how to spell, and better than their non-texting counter parts.

OMG I h8 txt lol :smt043

As usual I will be the awkward one.

I dont like texting, might use is occasionally for short stuff like 'B there at 7pm' but never have back and forth convo's by text, if I want to tell friends/family something I SPEAK to them, maybe thats old fashioned of me.

BUT

Some bits of 'text speak' I do use on forums as seen, TBH, OMG, LOL, WTH etc simply because everyone online understands them, they save time and space in posts. I dont see how this is any different to ASAP, PS, PTO etc which were used in letters long before texting was created ( So sorry Texters, you did not invent Acronyms and abbreviations ).

So pros -v- cons of Text Speak

Pro's

Speed
Space in posts/texts

Con's

Loss of ability to spell/punctuate by people who do it all the time
Some people actually use it in face to face convo's, I heard some idiot say 'LOL' when talking and thought well clearing you're NOT laughing so...... ???

Once again, I am the bearer of bad news. In one hand, you're right. Abbreviations have been around for forever. In the other hand your wrong, txting improves spelling as well as communication skills.

I have yet to witness that...people in university still write not properly in spite of being in university. No wonders what is to blame...
Considering the level degrades itself as years go on..

Do you have anything other than poorly supported anecdotal evidence to back your claims?

It would be more correct to say improperly when speaking of those who attend university and cannot write properly. Although, I do understand that English is not your first language. I'm making a point that very few individuals are impeccable writers who never make any sort of error or mistake. The damned semi-colon kills me every time.

There are people who simply cannot spell. I know many who learned how to write phonetically, which typically means that they spell things horrifically. There is also dyslexia, and those who are diagnosed with it might find text talk to be easier (or more difficult, I didn't attempt to search for a study on that).

Then there are those who simply cannot spell to save their life. I think that has more to do with memory than actual writing ability. I can see how text talk could make spelling more difficult for the younger generations simply because they do not see words spelled out completely nearly as often as they see them written in text talk and thus cannot remember the correct spelling of the word.
