I started nearly 24 hours late and haven't suffered too badly, but still playing catch up with some of the better players. Best advise is completely avoid stat building and hammer the UP button.

Ranks are not important right now. I can see for myself that those who have invested needlessly to achieve the upper ranks actually all have lower army sizes to those who have more wisely invested in UP. They will end up playing their own catch up game unless they use their turns wisely to promote their army size.

Yeah, I started over a month late last Era and finished 13th (which was stupid BTW), so I'm sure you'll be fine.
