night

I will think more on the possibilities because allowing to many Jedi/Sith is a dangerous thing in and of itself especially since forum combat is an extremely difficult thing to control especially when someone can just claim force senses enhanced their perception yada yada yada so a combat system will be necessary

the thing that will be hardest to set up for a combat system is death. People tend to just love their characters, so killing them off is a hard decision.
but its best to keep it simple. The combat system in shéral was almost non-present, but for the most part, it worked.

I disagree the combat system in Sheral was over done and far to difficult to keep track of, I think a better system would need to be thought out

you probably recall that better than us... it was your child, after all...

I think in order to effectively set up a combat system a certain kind of rock paper scissors paper spock theory will need to be set up

ie

Force User > non-force user (single)
Force User = Force User (single) this would be dependent on RP skill
non force users (two or more) > force user (single)

something along those lines that way it is very clear how powerful a character is, of course a non-force user could be a highly trained individual and be able to hold their own against a force user but those are kind of a general outline...

How powerful a character is permitted to be should probably be decided pre-creation... a bit randomly, though some idea of player skill should factor in.
We should probably get someone only of medium power, as we occasionally tend to mastermind/overpower characters.

oh, and since this is text-based, no point in having a list of force powers. such limits are typical in computer games and such, where it has to be defined by parameters. as seen in the EU books, the force isn't nearly so limited.

perhaps utilize some form of the D&D alignment system adapted to star wars? or would that complicate too much?

combat = rock paper scissors level should probably work well. Hit/miss/block.

the easiest way to do alignment is

good force user
good non user
neutral (bounty hunters, force sensitives that dont follow Jedi Sith mentality)
Evil non user
Evil user

anything else would be excessive I think, I mean honestly alignment is a bit useless I think unless playing DnD in which case it shows your gods etc which adds a depth not necessary here

hmm... true...

it could be used as guide when thinking up character mentality, but probably best to stick it away from anything more than a thought guide.

There's both chaotic darksiders and the orderly, the ones that plan ahead. Sidious/palpatine planned ahead, whereas clone wars animation character Savage Opress was chaotic.
But probably easier to define by whether a character is force-wielding or not and whether he/she is light-dark.
perhaps rather than linear have a 2-axis setup, with X-axis being light/dark, Y axis force/non-force? Or is that again the complexity?

i think its not a bad thought especially if we can embed some kind of random number generator that gives you a rating essentially 1-5 on force abilities 1 being an apprentice 5 being a master (below council members but still powerful) and for non force users 0- (-)5 -5 being an extremely skilled combatant with no force sensitivity 0 being only slight force sensitivity enough to account for a little bit of luck but it might be to much...

the RNG is a thing that would be very useful. So far we've not found one, but we'd love to have it. if someone finds some RNG that can be used here, we'd do what we can to bring it in.

http://www.mathgoodies.com/calculators/random_no_custom.html im not sure if you would be able to implant that here but *shrugs* it works

a good rule in preventing anyone from being too strong is to have a general rule. Win max 2/5 things. Loose minimum of 2/5. questionable result 3/5. but also sticking to the pattern of leaving the result of a swing up to the opponent. "A swings shovel at B" rather than "A hits B with shovel" Of course, exceptions for things like "A hits B with shovel, knocking B unconscious so that A can sneak past."

the implanting is the problem. it'd been nice if we could've found a way to pull in random results from random.org as that site has true random, not just seemingly random.

I wouldnt mind giving this a try, although I am not so good at a canon type role. I tend to make a mix of my favs and roll a character off of that. Can I pick a random name a build it within the context of the central theme?
