Laptops have become far more powerful (also quite heavier lmao) But they still won't compare to a good tower setup.

You do realise that anything you buy now will be worth less in the future.. right?

(So yes; money you spend now, buh-bye 99% of that money later.)
Unless you buy something that actually becomes worth more, like .. uranium.

What I basically need to know is the actual components I will need. E.g. desktop shell, fan, etc, etc
What I want: 6 to 8gb of memory
1TB HDD
1 to 2g ATI gfx card
win7
i7 processor.
Any help/advice?
you can save a heap by NOT buying a case or building your own
the nice er thing about this is you can pick up an industrial fan for 50-60 bucks at a yard sale (maby even 30) out it facing your machine (for the love of god put some sort of windbreaker infront of the cards and ram (ot have it pointed at there narrow sides)
thi will keep your machine cooler than 200 of them little fans with a fraction of the noise
also tb hds... you can get a much FASTER hd if you use 500 gb and just use externals for your adult film colection

used parts will also save you alot of money
people are stupid i cant tell you how many perfectly fine laptops ive baught for under $60 that ONLY had broken screens or even lesser problems

Here in england, the only people that have "Yard sales" are drug dealers

Same is true in the USA.

I find that rather insulting and narrow minded.
It is. I missed the 'only' part in Andy's post. While true that it is a good way to launder money, it is definitely not something only drug dealers do, in fact, it appears to happen quite a lot in regular communities.
I am not above admitting that was a gross and faulty generalisation; sorry for insulting you (and others).
