Well, do understand that most of the anime I've seen, I didn't see in English, and only a few I even watched in America. Most of my anime experience comes from having lived in Japan and fluently speaking the language. I look for the effect the anime had on the public, more than how much I liked it. To be truthful, Voices of a Distant Star is my favorite anime and I almost hated Spirited away. Notice how I ranked them though.

Always wanted to learn Japanese, but my University dropped it after my freshman year, and I absolutely suck at learning new languages
And yes, I also was looking on the effect anime had. I probably wouldn't include the minddump that is Eva in my top ten animes, and Tenchi I felt was average at best. I included thembecuase of their impact on animation, either in terms of public perception, artistic quality, or genre development.
I would honestly be hard put to list my favorite anime. My top 10 anime would probably have some of the same shows, but they wouldn't necesarrily match my 10 "must see" animes.

i have no favorite; i'll just set up a timeline of hoz i encountered anime so far, only mentioning the one that i rly liked
Rurouni kenshin (although they stretched it too far, about the first anime i saw)
DB-Z (man, was i hooked on this during my young years)
Rurouni kenshin OVA's (the before-series i found were nice, the after-series were less good imo)
Samurai Jack (not as good as RK, but still nice samurai, god i love samurai anime too, too bad never saw the final episodes and cant find em neither)
Samurai Champloo (for explanaiten, SC thread)
Samurai Deeper Kyo (gooood, can watch this one a zillion times)
gundam wing
gundam seed
gundam seed destiny
(these three need no explaining, always been addicted to mecha-type nime, and i find these the best)
Avatar (i like too, due to the elemental powers-thingy)
Blood+ (nice series, goes imo the deeper, is more cooler then the others)
now i'm still scanning the anime waves looking for samurai anime

the ranma anime series, though some episodes were GOLD, is mostly crap IMO. the OVA was better(as usual).
