however, a simple fix would be just to put the account on vacation, not delete it.
No one can tell what's going on in someone life at that time. I haven't paid for my account, but I know I've been off considerably for numerous reasons.
Putting their account in vacation mode would be a more sensitive way to handle it, which is supposed to be done by them, but when the poop his the fan humans minds don't necessarily focus on SGW first. Deleting and account when someone could possibly be going through a divorce, death in the family/friends, or rearrangement of real life is rather callous.

Excellent Point!
Maybe the solution is that if an account is inactive for a specified amount of time (say 1 month) - it automatically goes into a special vacation mode and is removed from the rankings.

It still doesn't address the point that more accounts looks like more players, which attracts more players, which brings in more money.

I really like your idea. It would cover the inactive accounts on the rankings problem, and protect the personal inventment(time, money, etc.) that the player has put in in the event that they were to stop playing for a period of time.

If the account is removed from the rankings I don't think that would be a problem. I don't think, in my humble opinion, the total number of players attract that many more people to play.
Why? I can't remember how many times I've answered questions about G+R and the rankings. I don't think people really care about rankings unless they are looking for G+R, simply based upon my experience answering questions about 0.2%, 2% and everything in between(I'm sure you've answered many of them too ManiacMan). If a large portion of players can't(for whatever reason) calculate where they should be to get G+R, I postulate that rankings rarely, if ever, was a concern for them, as evidenced by an inability(for whatever reason) or lack of experience working with the numbers required to calculate G+R properly, and to realize what the wrong way is. My supposition is that what most people care about is getting up to #1, or as high as they can go, and don't concern themself too much, until they are experienced players, like yourselves, with total numbers of people playing/(in)active accounts/etc.

I beg to differ. You see, forum has competition. I don't want to alert your attention to any of them, but assume you are a new player who has been made aware of a couple of these games from a referral site.
You only want to play one, so you do a bit of research. The first one has 1,000 ranked realms. The second has 50,000 ranked realms. Assuming they play almost identically, which do you choose?
EDIT: It doesn't rly matter if it only influences one person to start playing. You're asking forum to do some work making code that will not gain him any customers, and has the potential to lose him customers.
And, for the record, I'm not saying that I don't want them removed. I don't rly care myself. I'm just trying to explain why it won't happen.

I would actually pick the one with less players.
means the game is not going on for too long.
