Ok, sounds like a good idea. Planets then would really be a transitory object.

Under this system, they wouldn't be taking it, because it would be unlikely that they would ever actually obtain the planet.

The current system does work - my mothership managed to get lucky to find a planet on one of its many trips down to the supermarket and back.

But I agree that there should be a minimum combined strike and defence you should have before been able to conquer or liberate a planet.

Once your strike and defence falls below a certain point - you can still use your Mothership to attack but it cant be used to conquer or liberate planets.

You should also have to hold a planet for a minimum amount of time before getting rid of it.

Further to my suggestion how about something like this

the idea is you need a large 'army' to be able to refuel your mothership - ie no army of a certain size ms cant be sent out to conqueror planets as it cant recharge the tractor cells - but it can still explore or attack

therefore the larger the ms the larger the base army needed
