There definately a fine line. Where arrogance rears its ugly head from a person who actually has power then the respect tends to be quite false. It's a simple matter of minding your own business where those sorts of people are concerned.
True respect should be a very personal thing, it's almost like trust. It's not demanded or earned, it more likely developes and grows between sets of individuals, and of course, it then emits itself onto others who do not know you.

One must give respect to get respect and your post shows none for anyone.

I always give everyone respect to start, and frankly, giving people respect will (especially online) always get better results, because most people will realise that you have given them respect and treat you with respect in return. However, many people loose my respect, and for me, if you loose my respect you will have to work very hard to earn it back, and generally, the more I know a person the less respect I'll give, simply because the amount of respect I give in the first place requires them to be a saint in order to keep my respect, many people fall short of my expectations, I don't find it surprising because I expect perfection.
edit: just btw, yes, I am a horribly arrogant person, it comes from being brought up in one of the top schools in england, every day at that place is a reminder, you will be the best in the world.

As far as I see it, respect is earned or lost the very second you say something to me. Let's take a situation. I just massed you. If your first words are "WTH MAN? Screw you!!!!!!" Then no, you don't have any respect from me, and you've got a lot of work to do to earn any from me. On the other hand, if your first words are more respectful, such as "You've got my attention, why did you mass me?" Then you've got a bit more respect from me. One must give respect to receive respect, and if you don't give me any respect, then I don't give you any respect. Simple as that. I give everyone the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. I do believe that you must earn my respect, but to earn my respect, you don't have to clean my feet.

Very like the instant impression everyone takes of each other IRL, except, like me, with much more conviction, i like your view

** Default level of respect uploaded to systems. **

I think it's good. Respect is good. I love respect.
I'll lay off on the path of arrogance and turn to the light.
To some people I've insulted, I kind of forgot who exactly, but I apologise for my behaviour. I'll respect y'all from now on.

But, before they even send you a message, do you respect them as a player and person? Does the reaction either increase your respect for them, or lessen the respect you already have for them?
Having to earn your respect in anyway, is in my eyes, belittling. They may not be cleaning your feet, but having to earn basic respect is ludacris. It should be given freely.
But, above basic respect, becomes expemplary respect. this is what people gain via their actions and personality. You will gladly associate yourself with them on every occassion because they have proven themselves to be stand up people.
What i'm trying to get across is the fact that people should have basic respect given to them, and should give it. If people have to earn this, then the person vying for respect should be ashamed.
I hope everyone i meet gives me respect. If someone tells me i have to earn their respect before they treat me well, then they can sod off. How egotistical and big headed does someone have to be to say that?
Friends respect each other a lot, it's a default thing. People should have to earn your friendship, not your respect.

Respect and being treated like a normal human being are two very different things to me. If you've got my respect, you've got a lot of pluses with me. Unless you're in the negatives, then I still treat you like a human.

I treat everyone with respect. That doesn't mean that I necessarily respect their actions or their way of thinking, of course. What I do respect is their right to behave as they choose just as I can choose how I react to it or how much attention I pay it. I rarely respond in kind to insults, even if deserved.
If someone is behaving toward me in a manner that I would consider disrespectful, I simply ignore them or (what I've found even more effective) I will lay on the syrupy sweetness in such a way that it completely disarms them. I've found that people have a hard time being offense to me when I choose not to be offended and they can see their efforts to elicit a reaction from me have failed.

But if you've got my respect, then you could be my best friend, or someone i've never met.
If someone says to you "You have to earn my respect", how do you feel? Belittled? Pointless? No one should have to earn your respect. It's egotistical, it's narcassistic. You should give them your respect from the very second you make contact. If they then proceed to steal some money, then they've lost your respect have and have to earn it back, if you can forgive them.

I find this discussion kind of silly. Of course we don't respect everyone equally. That is impossible to do even for the most god-like person.
It is simply a matter of I know you. I have reason to respect you. If I don't even know you exist of COURSE I don't respect you.
On top of that, even those I have passing acquaintance with do not generate a certain amount of respect. Why should it? Respect means that i have reason to hold you in regard. Be that good regard or bad regard. If I have no intimate knowledge of WHO you really are, then I cannot possibly hold you in any kind of respect. Thus it is that respect is EARNED. You earn it thru interaction.
Manners and the societal etiquette and niceties are there to break the ice and allow interaction to occur at all. They help you earn good respect and shield you from negative respect.
To say that I owe anyone respect as a basis for dealing is not only moronic but idiotic. I owe no-one anything. Think of it this way.
The phone rings. MUST i pick it up and answer it? Of course not. I choose to interact with the caller. Therefor because it is a choice, they're receiving something from ME. Hence they are privileged to be granted a hearing. I do not owe them my time. I do not owe them my thoughts or opinions. I would be just as right to tell them to go away as I would to agree to speak with them. This is the basis for good manners and etiquette.
You are acknowledging that noone owes you squat. And vice versa, you owe noone. Therefor the code of conduct is compiled to allow everyone to receive 'the proper dues' and allow society to function as a whole.
But respect is what takes you from status of acquaintance to friend. Or higher. And that indeed, must be earned.

It depends whether you value human life in itself, or value the product of human life, I personally think it is completely inappropriate to not respect anyone untill you have interacted with them. No respect means you don't give anybody any value, you haven't interacted with the people in Africa dying daily, does it not matter to you that thousands of them die daily?
I respect everybody because I understand that we are all part of a whole (Yes I have buddhist type view) and we all share something.

Here's a better question. Define respect.
