maybe they have some kind of way that they can monitor someone for the kind of "package" that contains password changes? and then fish out the new password from that "package"?

Who would invest thousands of dollars in a browser game? I know some people do so on games such as World Of Warcraft but that is also a game that you download and install locally and is backed up by a large company is unlikely to be disbanded anytime soon. SGW is the project and hobby of a guy who could shut the whole thing down on a whim at any time.

It seems like a pretty foolish thing to do but meh. I guess people can spend their money any way they choose.

Bryan, if you changed your password then someone must've got some kind of keylogger program onto your machine somehow... Maybe you're due for a virus/spyware scan?

I totally disagree with your idea - SGW is already farcically tedious to log into (online banking is easier), and it's only a game. For example, what if someone moves to a new address (house, not internet, I mean) with a new IP? How do they get back to their old IP to enable the new one?
