Obviously it is much better to be loved, fear is but a short term supliment that will kinda do... Case in point: Greek city states and Latin states under Rome: In times of crisis the first blew Athens off big time where with the latter only a pair joined Hannibal. And to relate that to ingame; we all saw what happenes if you loose the fear factor heh...
So spread the looooove...

The line between fear and respect is hazey...
If you respect someone because you fear them, you dont really respect them, you are simply scared of them, point blank...You cant always know where you stand with fear, you can with mutual respect or respect...This is how i see it, I respect Jedimaster, for one he makes me laugh, for 2 he doesnt take anything off anyone, which is cool, i dont however fear him, that being said if we where both massing each other at the same time he would clearly win
Svarun is anouther example, i have known him for a very long time, but only recently has he become a superpower, i still feel the same towards him as i always have.
Againt the same with corkscrew, i knew him when he had less than a million army size, he was still a damn good masser then though, but again, i respect him for skill, i do not fear that.
Fear would be me saying i fear STI cos he can kick the liveing hell out of me for the next 5 years and not with much effort, but there is no fear there, as he is a friend...
Hope that explains my stance on fear and respect, ive just re-read that and it confused me

One of my officers the other day made the comment I am the greatest CO he ever had and how much he loved me. At the same time he said something along the lines of 'You really have no clue how many people fear you.'
To me that is respect. I think we get fear and respect mixed up in this game.
This sums it up.
If you are straight with people which ever way you play the game if they know what or think what you may do you get people's respect/fear & then they love you

The delicate art of the Crusty.....
Grab your chosen victim's head. Best to do it in a position that will leave them immobile, a headlock is a good way to go. You then grind your knuckles into their scalp in a rapid repeated sawing movement for as long as you can keep them pinned down. Hurts like heck, and if you do it right you leave their hair in a really painful matted knot.
Kids - why not try it at home? Next week - the Chinese Burn.

You need another option
Feared
Loved
Ignored
Because you can get quite far in the game if you dont draw attention to yourself until your ready
