I think it's fair to compare the EU as a whole (27 members) to the US as that list broke the US up into states. So it's only right that if people can boast about a single state in the US being in top 10 we should see how they match as a whole.

US : 13,244,550
EU : 14,369,055 (note that the list doesnt have all 27 member states listed)

That puts america second.

Eh, not really.

I'd count the EU as a number of sovereign nations as a council, not as a single nation such as the United States.

For example if the Euro were to drop incredibly England would be far less hurt then france or Italy because it is not on the Euro, if the dollar were to collapse California would fall. The EU has no official standing, no seat on the UN, no military it is not a sovereign country like the United States or hypothetically california would be if it were to secede..

Norwegians often complain of high taxes and of problems with the "cradle-to-grave" welfare state. Often singled out are waiting lists at hospitals and shortages of public care for children and the elderly.

Unsurprisingly, the countries at the top of the list are high-income nations, as people in richer countries tend to be healthier and have more educational opportunities.

Iceland, Australia, Ireland and Sweden are ranked as the second through fifth best places to live

so anyways.. capitalism ftw!

but iceland...? :? i didn't know there was something there...

But appy, are you not aware america is made up of 50 states? Each State could constitute as a country in its own right, and wait...the war of independence was faught over...All these little countries wanting out..And THEN they where made a United States...So basically, you are exactly the same as the EU, Except 200 years older....

not so much anymore, buck. after our Civil War the ideas of states rights and the ability to secede were pretty much stamped out, making states essentially only sub-units of the whole country. They're not really independent countries anymore.

States are the same as counties except in a much larger sense, They have officials, they have local laws, they have a council/board or whatever. America is a single country with a different use of administration then some but still a country. Not a large mass/"Union" of different independent states.

When the states signed up to become a single country a few years after the revolution they became what the EU, COULD become but at the moment its not there.
