When a planet changes hands, a certain number of production facilities are destroyed on the planet. The cost of upgrading production, however, does not decrease to match the loss. Therefore, depending on the size of the planet, the number of production upgrades, and the number of upgrades lost in the removal, it may or may not be worthwhile to retake the planet, EVEN IF YOU HAVE BLANKETED THE SURFACE OF THE PLANET WITH BEACONS!
For example:
Planet 31,123,968,000 Income per Day 8626 (Def: 25,878,000,000) monsterous
I made sure to remove it immediately after the turn so I had some time to examine it because planet production is recalculated after the turn. The planet lost 5,065 production facilities in the removal. Immediately after taking it, the stats were the same (31,123,960,000 income) with a cost for upgrade of 76,000,000 naq.
However, after the turn the production stats dropped to 23,497,728,000 but the cost to upgrade to the next production facility remained at 76,000,000. If the previous owner decides to take the planet back or finds it with a beacon and removes it from a new owner, the planet will lose ANOTHER 4-5K production facilities and the cost to upgrade it will STILL be 76,000,000.
To recap...
Yes, I'm getting tired of the PMs saying "ha ha i dont care if you abandoned the planet, it was beaconed and ill get it back".
Ok, I don't care if you get your planet back because I know that: 1) I removed the entire defense which will have to be repurchased and 2) I destroyed 10-30% of the production of the planet but the cost to upgrade it remains the same, even if you manage to get it back.
If you thought losing your planet simply meant you had to buy a new defense after finding it with a beacon, you were mistaken. I hope this information is useful to you.
ah man, this brings back the good old memories!

Was this in a recent update because last time I had a planet stolen, I took it back and re-upgraded it to the same level as the other and it still cost exactly the same amount.

Dunno when/if it changed. AFAIK, it's been this way for a while.

could you throw in a few decent numbers that can be worked with, cos no matter what i do with the 15 or so planets i can get data from all did not suffer from being stolen?
such as size, stat bonus and next upgrade cost of one planet that has been taken and the same for another planet that has not been taken?

I'll keep an eye on it when I have a planet change hands, urogard. If I find out anything new or have different stats, I'll update the thread.

The unmodified empirical data is posted above. Draw your own conclusions. If someone has data that conflicts, I'd be glad to know about it. I simply reported my observations with a recently acquired planet. Those numbers and test results are certainly open to debate and scrutiny.
spoken like a true scientist :p

Also, are you sure it takes the naq it says it requires?

Justed wanted to put in an update on this. I had taken a naq planet that was at 5.5B it was reduced to 4.3B or something around there. I also had one I made on the market.
I got both of them to 4.5B today and tested it out.
The cost was the same 19,050,000 to increase from 4,502,016,000 to 4,503,168,000 for both planets (large).
I also noticed that when i was upgrading my UP planets they would show one number after the upgrades (ie 5150UP) then after the turn would be slightly less (5148). I believe it recalculates the "bonus" after a turn has been completed.
