I agree that extortion for $$ is totally wrong. That being said, this is a game. Everyday we all send thousands of pretend soldiers and spies to their deaths. We sit on our fake thrones as millions of fake slaves toil in our fake mines to produce fake resources to fund our fake empires. We participate in and condone pretend, arbitrary, mass warfare and fake theft but not fake extortion. I dislike bullying in all forms but it does seem strange that in this game quasi-moralistic values have developed. We encourage slavery, warfare, theft, deception and downright lies but we frown on extortion. Personally, I feel that it is unpleasant and I would never do it but it is part of the game none the less.
I agree that it would be unfortunate for a new player to bump into an extortionist, be sat on and eventually leave the game but we have all been massed and seen our accounts in tatters. Anyone who gives up that easily would probably not have gone particularly far in the game. We all know how much time and work goes into building a decent account here.

I dont have time to read all the pages of this thread.... so some of this maybe repeated.
extortion - well aint that bad. its the bullies in the playground, just in the game. its all about how you deal with them. so they mass down your account.... build it up. they sit on your account..... get on the forum and look for a decent co and explain the situation and see if he is willing to help.
if the extortionist is doing this to you he WILL be doing it to others..... forum.... band together and sort the extortionist out..... mass him
if anyone leaves the game because of bullying/extortion they they are taking the easy way out and just giving up... only the strong survive... the strong aint the people with the biggest army, but the people with the will to carry on
quote from the new rocky balboa movie.-
"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place It will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward, how much can you take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! "
ask for help.... thats what people are for. beat the bullies - it cost for them to sit on you. and the extortionist can afford to sit on 10 of you. stand tall and stand together

i think the freedom to play the game in what manner you choose is important just like free speech in r/l
HOWEVER im sick of seeing things like this in people planet logs...
Have I attacked you ??? ???
maybe I did ??? ???
if you want I stop ??? ???
Pay me a tribute of 10 bill ??? ???
per week and became my officer ??? ???
no offence but recently these sort of inflammatory remarks on planets have been getting on my t*ts - i know we now have purgatory - but the sooner this sort of anti-social and extortionistic bollox disappears the better

I think any player who finds themselves on the wrong end of the stick should come to the forums and make a plea for assistance. I know I've been willing to extend aid in the past and will probably continue to do so.

My take on this, without reading any to the topic...don't wanna taint my opinion.
The way to avoid extortion is to have a good commander or good alliance or both.
When I first started, my commander was in the top 5. THIS saved me a lot of hurt...(btw, he's still playing...rasterblaster)
Anyhow, As I start anew. It's the same deal, if someone tries to extort from me...They are welcome to try. But first I will look at several things.
1. Is he bigger then me.
2. Is he bigger then my alliance.
3. Is he bigger then all my friends.
4. If not, arrange destruction.
5. If so, he must be etl or something...but even then see what can be worked out and make said person a friend...thus avoiding the problem entirely.
There are players who hate such demands. I am one of them, so if someone that I can take extorts you.......msg me

Flavar is also of the same train of thought. He started the Bully Control for this purpose.
Thank you,
Bill

Well to put a long story short. I stole a planet. The guys commander msg'd me asking for it back (by the way I wasn't online since I took the planet). Then he got his commander to mass everything I had. Now the player who I stole the planet off is demanding 150bil naq. Let's say I lost quite a bit more than 150bil worth of naq through the massing.
None waited for a reply and now I'm sitting in a very vulnerable position with 3 people who are at the moment bigger than me.
Sad thing about it is I would have given the planet back given a chance but I don't think I should now.

They're not big at all but at the moment I'm just over 400K army size. Two of the guys has 800K - 1.1mil army. I can't see the biggest guy. He's part of the Alpha Allegiance. He is also an LG and ranked around 300. The other two are not part of it. The other two are in the Gods of Europe alliance. You don't have to help, although if you do it would be greatly appreciated. If you want id's just let me know
I'll abandon it now

Edit: I sent him a message saying that if he wants that naq or planet that the biggest guy (who massed me) must replace everything he destroyed and stole. I haven't heard from any of them since that message

bill.
sorry look like fun
but yeah i think the whole demanding of goods is completely out of order, especially if the guy/gal did nothing wrong. my 2 cents.

I do not think it is fair and at this very moment my entire alliance about 14 players is facing this very problem. A player is threatening the entire alliance for goods or he will mass and sit on each and every one of us until the demand is met.
How can this be fair and productive for the game?
All it will most likely lead to is the loss of 14 active players and encourage the extortionist that he can continue this and bully other people out of the game.
