anyways, in our opinion, it normally isnt to be considered offensive... but it can be used to offend... and then it will be modded...

that has little relevance, to the topic. Almost any swear mild or not it can be put in a context which it fits in a grey area. Again I iterate if you start making excuses or finding ways to use these swears you are only promoting the use of them for childern.

I just find it hard people can say its a bad word. If I post live in Hell, Michigan. Will I get a warning? If I post "Go to Hell." Will I get a warning. All of those are places, but yet mods say Hell isn't allowed.

The word has negitivie meaning and proper nouns have a totaly different meaning then those of nouns, adjectives, verbs, ect.
Your still generating an excuse that has little relevance, but I do agree it is a word nontheless.

Just don't see how Hell, even when it is not used as naming a location, is a foul word.

Its a word with a negitive meaning, which implies it to be orgin of blasphemous language.

You seem to be continually missing the point, and have yet to actually clarify why you think 'Hell' is an offensive word. And it is NOT (repeat, NOT) a word that is banned from prime time television and/or schools - my son came home from school the other day and when I asked what he'd done at school, he said that they'd being doing some Religious Education and they talked about God and the Devil and Heaven and Hell. And I direct you to the numerous places in the World that are called 'Hell'. I direct you to advertisements on billboards and in magazines kids are able to buy, advertising the films 'Hellboy' & 'Hellboy 2'.
Are you also saying that the forum member with the username 'Hellfire' can no longer use that name on the forum?
Yes, 'Hell' can be used to offend or curse - but so can many others and to ban/filter them all, when they have perfectly legitimate and acceptable meanings would not only be a never-ending task, but would also be rather stupid as we'd not be able to write anything.
In fact there's a good example in my last paragraph - the word 'stupid' if used in a certain context can be used to deliberately offend or belittle, do you propose that we ban that too? And I reiterate the point in my last post - that some people find the belief of others in 'Heaven' or 'God' offensive to their intelligence - but I don't suppose for one minute that anybody proposes to ban/filter these words, and nor should they!
What about the following words?:
- nuts
- balls
both are derogatory/cursing words when used in a certain context, but perfectly legitimate in others......
- 'gay' can be used in an offensive or derogatory manner, but it isn't banned.......
Bottom line - it is a word that isn't banned or filtered on these forums, but (as stated previously) can be modded as appropriate by the forum staff - if needed; and banning/filtering all words which
could be used in an offensive/cursing context would be a pointless never-ending task.
I think my stance on this is clear - and won't change! I have 3 kids, and I'm all for bringing them up as well as I can and encouraging them not not to swear or use words offensively. We can only do so much in here and I personally think the balance is as good as it can be without going into overkill. But it doesn't matter what we do in here - the fact is there are some people out there who do swear in front of their kids - their kids then think it's acceptable and then pick it up in the playground. Kids also hear things when they're just out and about in the street, or in the town - you just have to be sat on a bus or train, or in a restaurant or stood in a queue to hear people (adults and older kids) swearing.
As I said - the balance is good here (And to be honest I've never seen so many people use 'Hell' in an offensive context until you brought the subject up - which is another thing about 'people' - tell them they're not allowed to do something and they try and find ways to rebel, sometimes not mentioning things is the best way to not cause a problem!)) and I for one don't think it needs to be changed - which will be my final word on the matter.
I suggest that if you really do want to take this further that you ontact one of the Forum Admins directly - but please try and clarify your comments, as I believe nothing you have said so far (or anything you could ever say) would justify the banning/filtering of the word 'Hell'.

depends in what context it is used.
If you say bloody hell, then yes it is a curse word, though whether cursing is right or wrong is a different debate (personally i think even the notion of such being wrong is insane...but then again thats because the times have changed. )
As for the sentence "I think you should all go to hell." Well thats not bad, it is cursing. "I think Hell is a bad place." Thats not cursing now is it....
Is having to spend £660 on a new laptop when ur a poor poor student hell...well id say yes...and its totally wrong..all laptops for students should be free.

Your being far to analytical...
And me yes I am being far to contextual, for that I am sorry. I would like to note that I did not ever say that television banned the word 'hell' or other mild obsenities. I did state that words of this nature are subjected to Content Rating.
And those ratings are typicaly shown for adults to be aware of a programs contents that they allow their child/children to watch (This i did not state before, so I seperrated it. I figured I didnt have to mention it before).
I would like to ask my question again though, seeing how it didnt get properly anwserd.
So what age group does the SGW and the offical forums belong to?
Also I would like to state that I do find all of your opinion's valid and thank you for expressing them, I respect that. But do not have accept them by any means.
Regards,
General Orion

I think you agree youre over 13 or something by default.. when applyn to forums / game...
I m quite sure native english speaking kids at 13 know more curse words and insults in english that most of us from non eng. native guys, so its doubtfull they will learn something new from us, or be seriously damaged by anything they might read here.
I also prefer freedom of speach oposed to strict "filering".
no word by itself is bad, its only what ppl make out of it, and the context in which they put it. Ergo, ban the "problematics" and the rest is fine

You really wouldn't want that..

considering who qualifies as such and all.

Great.... so promote them to use these words more often?
And its not about damaging them so much as making an example, and promoting them to use quaint, sophisticated, and cultured lanuage.

Additionally you can also still have your freedom of speech and not use words that have negitive meaning, by finding words that are more quaint, sophisticated, and cultured.
You can still make the same point without using words with negtivite meaning...
