Mods only play a small role in forums, its the people that make forums what they are...
The main issue is that half the game hate the other half, numbers (units, naq, uu) have become to big, people don't care about the stats, they don't fight as hard for them, there just isn't as much soul/heart put into the game anymore....

Its just the way it is.
Hmm - the point is - it CAN be controlled, by filters, rules and moderators.
However, time and time again, people believe they are above the rules because of their 'standing' in the community or the size of their game account - and persistently cross the boundaries - circumventing the filters, breaking the rules and disrespecting the very people who are trying to keep the forums in a decent state - and once that happens, it seems that a lot of people jump on the band-wagon, with over-inflated calls of 'mod-abuse', yet many of those who criticise the state of the forums go quiet.
This has not been helped by certain past forum staff who abused their position - and as much as I know smoosh meant well in his vision for the forum, it would only really have worked in a perfect world.
Things may never get back to what they once were - however, I have seen a slight improvement in certain areas since the new change in Adminship. Part of that change is due to less tolerance towards rule breaking / personal abuse and unwarranted taunting - and a slight improvement is better than no improvement at all, and gives us something to build on.

To put it bluntly.
STI
yes the forums are becoming deader,
and wolf.
i seem to recall that before the filter people were better spoken, even if they did offence some of your moral senses.
However the fact remains, that where ever any child can access the internet, watch tv, read books, listen to other people, where ever they can gather information, they will, further more alot of those places the infomation is not filtered. What you and others are doing to this forum is akind to murder, creativity shouldn't be killed off, and expression is just that expression.
If someone wants to come off sounding like a jerk, let them, that said mods are more than welcome to clean it up, however please keep the intent. Some people post one thing, and so " the mods just mod into it "he was very upset with..., or something, things you can have fun with" however when someone just uses it during the course of tpying, that it has a context that is servered, it's not well SPAM.
Anyways
heres a link to some interesting topics on the subject however i don't vouch that they aren't for anyone under 18 or over 50.( old dogs don't learn new tricks)

Oh and on a side note.
Canadian is now a new rasict term.... See the problem with adding filters just the rules of the words, change to solve the problems, being artifical or not in nature.

Reading HE's post (not reading the rest of the thread) I would like to give my 2 cents or whatever you Americans say -
"Curse Words" are only seen as offensive by people who think they're so special and important that others have to act a certain way around them so they feel comfortable or whatever it does for them.
Cursing to me is an emphasis on what I'm saying. I actually get annoyed by people who think curse words are wrong. Everyone curses.
My Granny was religious and never cursed but she once let a curse word slip during one of the World Cups. It's just the way it is.
Most underage kids here go to sites like "chans" that have much more obscene things there than words. Curse words wouldn't offend them in the least.
When you limit the words people can use you limit the person.
Just because you were brought up to think a certain way doesn't mean its right. I was brought up to think that cursing was wrong. I never believed that. I curse - I curse a lot. Friends even tell me I'm using the "F" word too much and I'll tell them what I just typed.

Re: Forum Demiise
Seriously? Canadian became a racist word?
Oh god...dumb [racist] people can be happy that soon enough every single word will be banned thanks to their dumbness..
There are words that are CLEARLY racists, but please...Canadian.
It's a nationality!
Something funny to notice though, there's no proper word to qualify inhabitants of United States!
In spanish, they are called estados unidenses, and in english, they don't even have a proper translation for that!

Re: Forum Demiise
Cursing does have it's place (I'm in the Navy for heaven's sake - and swear like the proverbial sailor - So, High Empty, it offends me not one bit that people swear and curse on here - it is the fact that they break the rules that is my concern) - and yes, we know that kids use it - but that does not mean to say that they have to be free to use it wherever they like - or that it is to be encouraged.
Just because you can do a thing it does not necessarily follow that you should do that thing. So, just because people are allowed to curse in SOME real life situations, and SOME places on the internet - it does not follow that they MUST be allowed to do so here.
The filter (which has been around since the very early days) cannot be blamed for an increase in cursing, and to suggest so is, frankly, ludicrous - it's intent was to eradicate those words which are deemed inappropriate - i.e. the kind of words any normal person probably wouldn't use when conversing with their gran. Unfortunately, over time, someone became over-zealous with the list of words on there - but that itself is not the problem - the problem is people circumventing it, knowing they are breaking rules, and then moaning afterwards. It's like stealing, getting away with it initially, getting found out later and then moaning about it because even though it is against the law, you did it in such a way that it was 'allowed'.
Language and attitude (language is the minor problem in my opinion) has changed in the forum in tandem with how they game has changed - the game changes have bred a level of arrogance that some people cannot seem to leave in the game, and must bring with them into the forum.
Unfortunately it is only a minority of individuals that have, at times, forced the forum staff to enforce more stringent rules as regards the use of language - and more often than not these are older persons, as opposed to kids - but once one starts, and is seen to get away with it, others start. Some don't know when to stop, and things get hostile and it isn't long before things are out of control - that is the problem.
I totally agree that some words that have been added to the filter in the past (maybe some that are currently there now too - I don't know - I'm not familiar with the current list), should not have been there, because they have a perfectly legitimate and uninsulting use in one context, but had been 'filtered' because they were used in another. I'd be quite happy for a lot of the words on the filter to be removed and individuals who misused such words to be dealt with by the mods on an individual basis - but how long would it be before somebody says 'That's not fair - it's not on the filter list, so it should be allowed'? It's all about the context.
Personally, I think constant and unwarranted use of cursing only shows a lack of vocabulary and original thought - there are cleverer and more amusing ways of emphasising/getting your point across without resorting to cursing. Ultimately if people want to appear ignorant and break the rules, then let them crack on - but if it does break the rules (which is my concern as a mod), they suffer the consequences - simple as, there's not really anything that can be said on top of that.

hahaha...love it lol. Only just re-read this topic.
This is all a very complicated issue now, and we have the start of a new era, with a great base (the new admins) now we need the long needed complete and utter overhaul of the mod team, forums 'position' (word filter, rules etc etc) and a general clean up. A lot of work, but hopefully all in the pipeline.
