It can well be that the test you took did not have the usual (100,16) normal distribution but a higher mean or higher standard deviation.
well. given your terms, higher than 140 is just slightly higher than two deviation above par, meaning about 2 percent of people.
over 158 is 3 deviations above par, which is about 0.15 of people.
now, if you know 1000 people, and asuuming normal distribution, 2-3 of them are above 140, and one or two are above 158 (statistically speaking, of course). most people meet a few thousand, if not tens of thousands people, so yes, id say most will know a few people who are above those standards.
having said that, i don't accept IQ test as a criteria for anything.
the proof, i say, is in the pudding.
doesn't matter what you scored in some pen and papere exam, matters how you fare in RL.
