Yes, that is true, at first ascension was only supposed to be for those that could reach the top 100 and it was supposed to be a voluntary means of resetting the largest accounts in main to allow for the game to re-balance but as you stated those ascending were able to rebuild fast enough to regain their ranks very quickly (and before most could gain the required G&R to ascend their first time) by the means of transferring uu, turns and naq to a friend while ascending (something admin did not foresee at the time and lead to increased losses for transferring uu) and so G&R ranks were modified to be determined by the percentage of players in the game.
Much later on it was found that the rankings for G&R were once again out of balance due to inactive accounts and it was at that time that admin placed the first limitation on how long an account would remain in the game if inactive and not in vacation mode. After the allotted time expired the accounts would auto-delete from the game and this has somewhat balanced the system out.
Now the main thing that changes it are which alliances at war at what time, or at least so it seems to me anyway.

G&R hasn't been as high as 400 since 2005.
and It's been in the 900-1.2k range since 06.
*chuckles* considering a) ascended started in sept 2005 and b) it's based on how many accounts there are in the game and c) we didn't have major growth to the community till the middle to end of 2006..... I highly doubt gnr range hit 1000 before the beginning of 2007. Just saying. for the first year and a half to two years ascending was as hard as it should still be.
Hello Rienna. G&R was in the 400s at the very least by the first month of 2006, since I missed those ranks by about 50 positions at the time. I ascended two months later in the 400s. Initially, G&R was only available to the top 100, but that was changed pretty quickly when it seemed that most of the top accounts could get right back into glory after ascending.

*applauds* thank you for your memory, that's exactly the point I was trying to prove. My first account ascended for the first time in summer 2006 and I remember needing a rank in the high 400's. I was just trying to say that this "rank 1000 for GnR" in 2006 was an invalid statement. Ascension used to be alot harder to do

Indeed it was easy...as soon as I ascended..within the day I was rank 1 again in main, rank 1 in ascended and rank 1 in quantum..lasted a day before I massed Jay6669 and Thor. I doubt that feat will ever be done again.

Maybe if i can get someone from Wall Street to play, I'm sure they'll somehow top that feat tenfold.

Its irrelevant how easy it is to get GnR. Unless you've made it all the to TUK (or wherever you plan to stop ascending, usually somewhere around TOE) you cant actually play the game properly.
With covert level 36 becoming the minimum requirement, you cant even compete whilst ascending. So you become a statbuilder type who shying away from most confrontation, never really getting the experience of the war side of the game. You finally finish ascending, raise your covert and get in to your first battle and what happens? Bam! Massed+sabbed and with limited experience of how to deal with that, you go semi active and finally, inactive.
Now that's assuming you have the patience and heart to actually continue playing til you finish ascending...
When the current big names finally call it a day, who will take their place?

??

Let me ask, do you know me?
I was once a well known name in this game and was a fairly established warmonger at the time, as were others before me like Iron2047, The Saz, Opticallove and the3rdlibra (sorry, not doing the l33t spelling, lol) and do you know any of those names?
When some leave there are always others that rise to take up the reigns.

Alternate names: Thurisaz. I remember hearing about that guy when I was new to GW
But my point was that with the way things are currently, there are so few new folks coming through the ranks. The last bunch was probably Kaboomer and Golden Wing and IIRC neither of them raised their account from unascended to TUK...

VAGAB0ND did raise his account by himself even though I think he traded mid-ascension process, but still.

Exactly.
I seam to recall some people had pretty big words about Nebulator, he fell (caught cheating too after EtL whooped him), others said JUAN would be the nr. 1 rank player of all time, STI sure showed him... etc... etc...etc
It's simply how it works.
