It's not just based off your CER but also your planet total. Don't train more then what you're comfortable losing. Everyone's different. Some say don't train more then 30% of your total planet count. Now, someone destroyed your defense and did a direct attack on you. So you either farmed the wrong person or they picked you for an easy descension and wanted to increase their kill count. Whatever the reason was/is they may continue the direct hits which means they will keep destroying whatever defense you build.
Personally speaking, I wont descend someone unless they've done something that I deem worthy of them needing descension. However, I will destroy any defense in the ascended server if the realm has enough dmu out. Though there is one that I know of that would need to increase my assassin level much higher before even trying.
Point is if you have enough dmu out there are people that will DM through your assassins if your defense is too high for their strike.

I was looking at attack options on someone's page and one of them mentioned being able to attack their income troops. Something about revolution, do I need to now worry that some **Filtered** can make my miners disappear?

miners in main as well as income planets in ascended can't be attacked or killed

Ok... so what does "Mission to disrupt the labour forces of the target realm.
The workers will revolt, or be freed, or killed, but will serve their master no longer.
Will consume 6 Action Turns." mean then?

Initiate Revolution removes a players income planets and puts them as undeveloped planets. It does not kill the planets but just untrains them. I suggest against using it as it makes a good farm less of a farm.
Back in the beginnings of the ascended server players had the option to raid other players planets. You could use Initiate Revolution to untrain the income planets and then raid them. Raiding is no longer an option.

So they can't take them or destroy them but it still sounds like a nuisance. How best can I prevent my defense planets from being destroyed like they were. Just train a lot of assassin planets and upgrade the assassin skill or is there more to it?
On another note if I upgrade my repulsion and constitution enough can I simply block all attacks? It looks that if you have 50% of each then next to nothing should get through. If you start with 100% and bounce back half of that and can absorb half of the rest that gets through then you are only dealing with 25% of the original attack. So then if you are at 75% for each you would only deal with a tiny portion.
I'm at 26% repulsion and will only take 74.5% of the rest that reaches me. That means all I'll be taking is slightly under half of what I'm attacked with. It doesn't say but I'm guessing at least that this only counts for normal attacks and not ascended.

I guess you can call it a nuisance but I honestly don't think anyone uses that feature anymore. Also with a recent update your undeveloped planets also generate income though not much.
As I said before everyone is different on the amount someone should have trained. Say you have 100m interlinked defenders (supers) then you should have 300m to 500m assassins protecting them. But your military levels come into play when training planets as well. The higher your levels the better. There are quite a few people going for the defense/assassin combo with production and no farming. Meaning they build 100 quad to 200 quad defenses with 5 billion to 10 billion assassins protecting their defense. The rest of their planets are trained in Labor planets with a high Production level giving them a high income. You currently don't have enough planets for that setup. The largest I've DMed was 179q just to get the 10's of quad dmu it was attempting to protect.
No. Upgrading your Personal abilities gets extremely costly. I'm sure there isn't a limit on how far you can upgrade them though. If you have 50% on each and someone with a 2 bil toc hits you 50% will be bounced back leaving 1 bil to hit your constitution. 50% will get stopped there leaving 500m to go up against your Defense Capacity. If your dc is also 50 then it will stop 250m and allow 250m to do damage to your Life Force and possibly your Reserves. Even though there have been two increases to the Total Offensive Capacity recently it is still cheaper to build your personal defense levels then it is to build a Descenders ToC.
I would consider a normal attack in ascended attacking with your military planets which is your Physical Realm Attack Power level. Ascended attacks deal with the following levels: Energy Attack Power, Energy Attack Skill, Energy Absorption Power, Energy Absorption Skill, Energy Repulsion, Personal Constitution, Energy Flow, Energy Channeling, and Maximum Natural Energy Capacity. People don't usually spell these out so you'll see them abbreviated all over the place. Also Mnec will sometimes be referred to your LF level which is Life Force level. When doing an ascended attack or direct attack you use your att power/att skill and your MNEC. You defend with abs power/ abs skill, rep and your con. Your flow and channeling are your recovery. Your flow recovers your life force and your channeling recovers your reserves. You can only attack or be attacked once every 3 hours currently which is 6 turns. Its best to be able to recover your LF in 3 turns or less.
I could go on but I'll stop here for now.

Yep, most of that I figured out but I didn't realize how important assassins were. I've been putting all my efforts into income and increasing my UP which while not huge is accelerating. I was able to upgrade my UP by 13 million per day just yesterday alone. Its only 142m at the moment but a week ago it was less than half of that. Thanks for the info, I'll adjust some things to better defend myself.

*ALERT, WTH HAPPENED* I just remembered that I had upgraded my expansion to 165.7 million per day last night because I spent two hours farming and putting it all into charisma and expansion fleets. Right now on my page it says I am only at 155 million per day expansion! How could this change!?
*Addition* My charisma level is exactly where it was when I was done upgrading last night but I'm still missing 10m+ per day. Could this be some kind of glitch, I'm positive I was making 165.7m per day last night?

There must be a glitch, now it is fluctuating all over the place. Sometimes it says I'm making 87m per day, right now it is telling me I'm making 171m per day. It says two different things from my main page and my introspection page, what the hell.

You went over 2 billion total planets.
This message can be read on the lower left hand side of your Cosmic Development page under the area you increase your fleets:
Note: When your total realm size exceeds 2 billion planets, your rate of growth slows...
You are currently growing at 21.01 percent of full capacity...This affects just new planet finds, not current planets.
Of course your % will be different then mine.
Also the CER on your main page is your current growth. That that is shown on your Introspection page is your Raw CER.

I see that, however why would my posted expansion rate on my main page actually drop by five million per day from last night to today? That is not at all proportional. Also it fluctuates from turn to turn without me putting any DMU or LF into upgrades.

My CER drops several hundred thousand every turn despite adding more fleets every turn. I'm going backwards.

don't worry you're still moving forwards

just at a slower rate
the intropection page shows your TOC which you've built.
mine is Cosmic Expansion Rate 603,181,089 planet / day the realm page shows your current rate of growth taking into account the slowing of the rate of growth
Cosmic Expansion Rate 61,216,800 planet / day as you can see its quite considerable when you get a bit bigger
